Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Operate a variety of professional broadcast cameras, including studio pedestal, handheld, jib, crane, and robotic systems, for live and pre-recorded television productions.
- Compose and frame shots with precision, applying the artistic and technical principles of cinematography to create visually engaging and coherent sequences.
- Execute dynamic and smooth camera movements, such as pans, tilts, zooms, dollies, and trucks, to follow on-screen action and talent as directed.
- Collaborate in real-time with the director and technical director via a headset, responding instantly to cues and making adjustments to capture the best possible shots.
- Perform rigorous pre-production checks and calibrations on all camera equipment, including lenses, viewfinders, and support systems, to guarantee optimal performance.
- Set up, position, and strike cameras, tripods, monitors, and associated cabling in both studio and challenging field environments, ensuring a safe and efficient workflow.
- Meticulously adjust camera controls, including focus, iris, white balance, and shading, to achieve and maintain optimal picture quality and consistency across multiple cameras.
- Operate Electronic News Gathering (ENG) and Electronic Field Production (EFP) camera packages for remote broadcasts, live news reports, and on-location segments.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues with camera systems and accessories under the pressure of a live broadcast to minimize on-air disruptions.
- Maintain a deep understanding of the show's rundown and script to anticipate camera moves and shot requirements proactively.
- Work effectively within high-pressure live broadcast environments, reacting swiftly to unforeseen events and last-minute changes from the control room.
- Assist the lighting department with fine-tuning lighting for specific shots, ensuring talent is well-lit and the desired mood is achieved.
- Ensure all camera work strictly adheres to the established visual style, brand guidelines, and aesthetic standards of the specific program or network.
- Manage and secure all camera equipment during transport, setup, and teardown for on-location shoots, ensuring its safe handling and security.
- Operate specialized camera support equipment, such as Steadicams and gimbals, to create fluid, stabilized shots for high-action or cinematic sequences.
- Stay current with the latest advancements in camera technology, lenses, software, and production techniques to bring innovative solutions to the team.
- Capture compelling B-roll footage during field assignments that enhances the story and provides valuable assets for the post-production process.
- Skillfully light interviews and scenes in the field using portable lighting kits to achieve a polished, professional look consistent with broadcast quality standards.
- Log and meticulously report any equipment malfunctions or maintenance requirements to the broadcast engineering department for timely repair.
- Maintain situational awareness on set or in the field, navigating around other crew, equipment, and obstacles safely and efficiently.
- Clean, maintain, and properly store camera equipment after each use to ensure its longevity and readiness for the next production.
Secondary Functions
- Assist the lighting and audio departments with setup and adjustments to ensure a cohesive production environment.
- Manage and organize digital media assets, including labeling, logging, and transferring footage for post-production.
- Participate in production meetings and site surveys to contribute to planning and identify potential technical challenges.

Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Proficiency with professional broadcast cameras (e.g., Sony, Panasonic, Grass Valley, ARRI, RED).
- Expertise in various camera operation techniques, including handheld, pedestal, jib, and Steadicam.
- Strong understanding of shot composition, framing, color theory, and visual storytelling.
- Deep knowledge of professional lenses, including prime and zoom, f-stops, T-stops, and depth of field.
- Technical fluency in video signal paths, codecs, frame rates, and broadcast standards (HD/4K/UHD).
- Experience with studio and field lighting principles and the operation of professional lighting kits.
- Familiarity with professional audio recording equipment, including various microphone types and basic audio mixing.
- Ability to perform precise white balancing, shading, and other camera control unit (CCU) adjustments.
- Experience with ENG/EFP (Electronic News Gathering/Electronic Field Production) workflows and equipment.
- Competence in using and framing for teleprompter systems.
