Primary Functions

  • Conceptualize, pitch, and develop original and enterprise story ideas during daily editorial meetings, championing content that is relevant and impactful to the target audience.
  • Exercise strong editorial judgment to select, prioritize, and arrange stories to create a logical, well-paced, and engaging newscast from open to close.
  • Write clear, concise, and conversational scripts, teases, and anchor copy that is factually accurate, legally sound, and adheres to the station's style guide.
  • Oversee the entire production lifecycle of the newscast, from pre-production planning and rundown creation to live, in-booth execution.
  • Collaborate intensively with directors, assignment editors, anchors, reporters, and graphic artists to ensure a unified and technically seamless broadcast.
  • Command the control room during live broadcasts, decisively timing the show, making real-time adjustments for breaking news, and communicating cues to the entire production team.
  • Manage and coordinate all live elements of the show, including remote interviews, satellite feeds, and reporter live shots, troubleshooting technical issues as they arise.
  • Vet and select the most compelling video, soundbites, and natural sound to visually enhance storytelling and maximize emotional impact.
  • Design and approve all on-screen graphical elements, including lower-third supers, full-screen graphics, and tickers, ensuring accuracy and brand consistency.
  • Act as the final gatekeeper for journalistic and ethical standards, meticulously fact-checking all information and ensuring content is fair, balanced, and free of bias.
  • Stack the rundown (the blueprint of the show) using newsroom software like ENPS or iNews, meticulously timing each segment and accounting for commercial breaks.
  • Aggressively monitor news wires, social media, emergency scanners, and competitor broadcasts for breaking news, and be prepared to re-shape the newscast at a moment's notice.
  • Produce compelling teases and promotional content for on-air and digital platforms to hook viewers and drive audience retention across segments.
  • Maintain constant, clear communication with the news team, including anchors, field crews, and management, before, during, and after the newscast to ensure everyone is aligned.
  • Adapt broadcast content for the station's digital platforms, including writing web-friendly headlines and posting video clips to the website and social media channels.

  • Mentor, train, and provide constructive feedback to associate producers, news writers, and production assistants to foster their growth within the newsroom.
