The U-Box Driver is responsible for safe, timely delivery and pickup of portable storage containers (U-Box) to residential and commercial locations, performing loading/unloading tasks, securing cargo, completing pre- and post-trip inspections, and providing professional customer service. This role combines defensive driving and hands-on physical work with accurate recordkeeping and on-site problem solving to support portable storage and moving operations.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Safely operate company vehicles (box trucks, roll-back trucks, trailers) to deliver and pick up U-Box portable storage containers at residences, businesses, and storage facilities while adhering to state and federal driving regulations.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, documenting defects and completing required maintenance reports to ensure equipment reliability and DOT compliance.
  • Load, secure, and unload U-Box containers and customer belongings using proper cargo securement techniques (ratchet straps, tie-downs, blocking/bracing) to prevent damage during transport.
  • Position, place, and level portable storage containers at customer sites using manual handling, lift gates, ramps, dollies, and, when applicable, mechanized loading equipment, following company placement standards.
  • Communicate clearly with customers on-site to confirm delivery/pickup instructions, obtain signatures, collect payments (when required), and explain container handling and rental terms with a professional, customer-first attitude.
  • Plan and follow optimized delivery routes using GPS and route-planning tools to meet appointment windows, minimize drive time, and maximize fuel efficiency across daily runs.
  • Adhere to Hours-of-Service (HOS) rules, logbooks, or ELD (Electronic Logging Device) requirements, maintaining accurate driving and work-time records as required by FMCSA and company policy.
  • Safely operate pallet jacks, hand trucks, dollies, straps, and basic material handling equipment to facilitate efficient loading and unloading while minimizing injury risk.
  • Maintain accurate delivery, pickup, damage, and inventory records in company systems or handheld devices, ensuring all paperwork and electronic signatures are captured and filed promptly.
  • Inspect containers for damage and cleanliness prior to delivery and after pickup; document and report any container damage, missing accessories, or customer claims according to claims procedures.
  • Execute safe backing, parking, and positioning maneuvers in confined residential and commercial sites, coordinating spotters when required and communicating traffic and safety considerations to customers and co-workers.
  • Respond to on-route issues, such as traffic delays, appointment changes, or site access problems, communicating proactively with dispatch and customers to re-sequence deliveries and maintain service levels.
  • Collect and handle customer payments, deposits, or written authorization when required, following company cash handling and transaction security policies.
  • Perform basic preventative maintenance and minor repairs on trucks and equipment (tire checks, fluid levels, seat belts, lights) and escalate mechanical issues to fleet maintenance teams when necessary.
  • Participate in safety meetings, driver training, and certification programs (e.g., defensive driving, cargo securement) and maintain required licenses and endorsements for the role.
  • Support branch operations by staging containers for loading, assisting with inventory counts, and preparing equipment for daily routes to ensure efficient dispatching.
  • Follow all OSHA and company safety procedures, including proper lifting mechanics, PPE use, vehicle safety systems, and site hazard awareness while working on customer property and public roads.
  • Provide professional, courteous service to customers during stressful moves, de-escalating conflicts, and documenting notable interactions or service issues for branch management follow-up.
  • Complete accident, incident, and damage reports promptly and accurately, cooperating with management and insurance teams to document claims and support repairs or replacements.
  • Ensure secure locking and handling of customer property and company assets on the truck and demonstrate strict adherence to privacy and loss-prevention standards.
  • Monitor and report fuel usage, mileage, and route efficiencies to support fleet cost control and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Assist with ad-hoc branch tasks such as light maintenance of storage areas, staging customer paperwork, and supporting cross-functional activities during peak move season.

Secondary Functions

  • Support branch dispatch by communicating real-time status updates, delayed arrivals, and ETA adjustments to improve customer satisfaction and routing efficiency.
  • Train and mentor junior drivers on safe container placement, cargo securement techniques, and customer service best practices to build a high-performing driver team.
  • Use handheld devices and mobile apps to capture delivery proofs, photograph container conditions, and sync records with the central system for timely billing and inventory reconciliation.
  • Collaborate with warehouse and operations teams to coordinate backhaul opportunities and reposition empty containers to balance regional inventory.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to reduce damage claims, optimize loading patterns, and refine appointment scheduling to increase first-time delivery success rates.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record; CDL Class B preferred or required by some employers.
  • Proven experience operating box trucks, roll-backs, straight trucks, or similar vehicles (26-foot trucks commonly used for portable storage).
  • Familiarity with DOT/FMCSA regulations, Hours-of-Service (HOS) rules, and vehicle inspection protocols.
  • Proficiency with GPS navigation and route optimization tools (Google Maps, Waze, dedicated ELD/route software).
  • Cargo securement expertise (ratchet straps, load bars, blocking, bracing) and knowledge of safe load distribution.
  • Experience with loading/unloading equipment: lift gates, pallet jacks, hand trucks, appliance dollies, and tie-down hardware.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
