Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead end-to-end UI engagements for web and mobile products, including discovery, stakeholder alignment, user flows, wireframes, high-fidelity mockups, interactive prototypes, handoff documentation, and post-launch iteration.
  • Conduct client workshops, design sprints, and stakeholder interviews to define product vision, UI requirements, acceptance criteria, and success metrics that align with business goals.
  • Create and maintain scalable design systems and pattern libraries (tokens, components, documentation) that ensure visual consistency, accessibility, and rapid engineering delivery across multiple product teams.
  • Translate user research and analytics insights into actionable design decisions, defining interaction models, micro-interactions, and edge-case behaviors that reduce friction and increase task completion rates.
  • Produce pixel-perfect visual design assets and specifications (spacing, layout grids, typography, color palettes, iconography) and ensure they are version-controlled and accessible to engineering teams.
  • Build interactive prototypes (Figma, Framer, Proto.io, or similar) to validate flows, animations, and transitions before engineering implementation, reducing rework and accelerating time-to-market.
  • Drive accessibility (WCAG 2.1 AA or higher) compliance across interfaces by defining semantic markup recommendations, color-contrast standards, keyboard navigation patterns, and ARIA usage, and by conducting accessibility audits and remediation plans.
  • Partner with front-end engineers to define component APIs, responsive behaviors, performance budgets, and integration steps to ensure that the final product matches design intent without sacrificing performance or maintainability.
  • Define and monitor UI KPIs (conversion, time-on-task, task success rate, drop-off points) and run A/B tests or multivariate experiments to measure the effect of design changes and optimize interfaces for business outcomes.
  • Mentor and review work of junior designers and cross-functional teams, providing constructive design feedback, design critique, and best practices to elevate team quality and consistency.
  • Create and present persuasive design proposals, rationale, and roadmap updates to executive stakeholders, explaining tradeoffs, user impact, and estimated effort to secure buy-in and prioritization.
  • Manage multiple client engagements or product squads concurrently, balancing design quality with deadlines, resource constraints, and shifting product priorities.
  • Implement and document front-end design handoffs with clear acceptance criteria, story-level design specs, code examples, and test cases to reduce ambiguity during development.
  • Run usability testing sessions (remote or moderated), synthesize findings into prioritized design improvements, and create clear next steps for product and engineering teams.
  • Audit existing UI ecosystems (legacy products, third-party integrations) and recommend modernization strategies, component refactors, and performance improvements to reduce technical debt and streamline UX.
  • Craft adaptive and responsive design strategies for multi-device experiences, ensuring layouts, touch targets, and interactions behave consistently across breakpoints and platforms.
  • Analyze competitive products and industry trends to inform design decisions and identify opportunities for differentiation or feature innovation.
  • Define animation and motion design guidelines that enhance clarifying transitions, provide user feedback, and reduce cognitive load without detracting from performance or accessibility.
  • Drive documentation efforts for design patterns, usage guidelines, component props, and code snippets to support self-service adoption by product teams and to improve design-to-development throughput.
  • Facilitate cross-functional alignment with product managers, QA, analytics, and marketing to ensure design intent is retained through launch, measure funnel performance, and iterate on issues discovered post-release.
  • Provide consultative recommendations for content strategy and microcopy in UI contexts to improve clarity, reduce support tickets, and increase conversion across onboarding and transactional flows.
  • Support procurement and evaluation of third-party UI tools, component libraries, and design platforms; recommend cost-effective tooling that integrates with existing engineering stacks.
  • Act as a quality gate for UI deliverables by running design reviews, conducting visual QA on staging environments, and verifying accessibility and responsiveness prior to release.
  • Create onboarding materials and run design training sessions for internal product teams to disseminate design system usage and to raise the baseline of UI craftsmanship across the organization.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc UI audits, heatmap analysis, and quick design triage tasks requested by product teams as a subject-matter expert.
  • Contribute to the organization's design strategy and roadmaps by identifying cross-product UI improvements and reusable patterns.
  • Collaborate with product teams to translate roadmap priorities into design deliverables, sprint tasks, and acceptance criteria.
  • Participate in sprint planning, agile ceremonies, and design grooming sessions to ensure UI dependencies, risks, and design handoffs are visible and scheduled.
  • Provide estimates for UI work (design, prototyping, testing) and help product owners prioritize features based on user impact and implementation complexity.
  • Coordinate with marketing and brand teams on visual consistency, campaign-specific UI components, and promotional experiences.
  • Assist in vendor selection and onboarding for UI outsourcing or augmentation when internal capacity is limited.
  • Maintain a living repository of UI research insights, test recordings, and design decisions for future reference and onboarding.
  • Help define metrics and dashboards in collaboration with analytics teams to measure the impact of UI changes on business outcomes.
  • Act as a client-facing liaison for UI scope, status updates, and design demos during consulting engagements.
