Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Supervise and coordinate daily operations of the ultrasound department, including scheduling of sonographers, patient flow, exam prioritization, and resource allocation to ensure timely and efficient diagnostic imaging services.
  • Lead hiring, onboarding, performance evaluation, progressive discipline, and professional development for sonography staff; create individualized competency plans and conduct annual performance reviews.
  • Establish, review, and update ultrasound imaging protocols and departmental policies in collaboration with radiologists, cardiologists, vascular surgeons, and other clinical stakeholders to ensure clinical consistency and diagnostic accuracy.
  • Develop and manage a comprehensive quality assurance and quality control program (QA/QC) for ultrasound systems and imaging studies; perform routine image audits, document deficiencies, and implement corrective action plans.
  • Maintain and ensure departmental compliance with accreditation standards and regulatory requirements (ACR, JCAHO, state licensure, HIPAA); prepare documentation and lead readiness activities for inspections and accreditation surveys.
  • Review image quality, preliminary sonographer notes, and technical adequacy of studies; provide direct feedback, coaching, and hands-on training to elevate diagnostic image quality across modalities.
  • Coordinate preventive maintenance, service contracts, warranty management, and vendor relationships for ultrasound equipment; prioritize equipment replacement and capital requests based on clinical needs and budget constraints.
  • Oversee inventory management for ultrasound supplies and transducer care products; implement cost-control measures and vendor negotiations to optimize departmental budget performance.

  • Manage scheduling systems, on-call rosters, and cross-coverage plans to meet 24/7 or extended-hours service requirements while minimizing overtime and maintaining staff satisfaction.
  • Serve as the clinical liaison between sonographers, interpreting physicians, EMR/PACS teams, and external referrers to improve communication, exam appropriateness, and report completeness.
  • Collaborate with IT and PACS administrators to maintain DICOM workflow, image storage, reporting interfaces, and integration with EMR systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner) to ensure seamless diagnostic operations.
  • Oversee billing and coding quality for ultrasound exams by working with coding/billing teams to ensure accurate CPT assignment, documentation of medical necessity, and reduction of denials.
  • Lead performance improvement initiatives such as throughput optimization, exam standardization, and protocol-driven care pathways; design pilot programs and measure outcomes to scale successful improvements.
  • Evaluate and recommend new ultrasound technologies, software (e.g., strain, elastography, AI-assisted tools), and transducer purchases; prepare clinical and financial justifications for capital investments.
  • Develop and deliver in-service education, competency assessments, and hands-on training sessions for sonography staff on new technologies, protocols, and best practices.
  • Facilitate case reviews, morbidity & mortality discussions, and multidisciplinary conferences to address diagnostic challenges and promote continuous learning.
  • Handle patient complaints and complex escalations professionally; conduct investigations, implement resolutions, and communicate outcomes to patients and clinicians when appropriate.
  • Maintain clinical competence by performing diagnostic exams as needed, covering shifts during staffing shortages, and serving as an advanced resource for difficult or high-acuity studies.
  • Participate in departmental and hospital-wide committees focused on quality, safety, process improvement, equipment planning, and clinical informatics to align ultrasound services with organizational goals.
  • Ensure documentation of policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and sonographer competencies is current, accessible, and compliant with record-keeping requirements.

Required Skills & Competencies

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Associate degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Radiologic Technology, or related allied health field, plus active sonography certification (ARDMS/RDMS/RDCS/RVT).

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Radiologic Sciences, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and progressive leadership experience.
  • Additional certifications in leadership, quality improvement, or healthcare management are a plus.
