- Prepare patients for exams by taking focused clinical histories, explaining procedures in lay terms, positioning patients safely and comfortably, and addressing concerns to minimize motion and maximize diagnostic image quality.
- Maintain competency in sterile/aseptic technique when performing sonographically guided procedures (e.g., cyst aspiration, biopsies, amniocentesis, paracentesis) by assisting physicians with needle guidance and real-time imaging during interventional procedures.
- Complete accurate and timely exam documentation and exam orders in the electronic medical record (EMR), including exam indications, technical limitations, quality assurance notes, and any urgent findings that require immediate physician communication.
- Identify and escalate incidental urgent or emergent findings (e.g., free intraperitoneal fluid, ectopic pregnancy, occlusive DVT, acute cardiac abnormalities) to the supervising physician or emergency team per institution triage protocols.
- Ensure patient safety and confidentiality by adhering to HIPAA regulations, department policies, infection control procedures, and equipment cleaning protocols between patient encounters.
- Operate, calibrate, and troubleshoot ultrasound equipment and peripherals; escalate complex repairs to biomedical engineering and maintain accurate inventory, service logs, and preventive maintenance records.
- Participate in departmental QA/QC programs by reviewing image quality, completing peer review modules, tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) such as exam turnaround times, repeat rates, and patient satisfaction scores, and implementing corrective actions.
- Serve as a preceptor for sonography students, new hires, and cross-trained technologists by providing structured training, competency assessments, and feedback to ensure consistent clinical performance and adherence to protocols.
- Manage workflow in busy clinical settings by triaging urgent exams, coordinating with scheduling staff, and adjusting protocols to meet clinical demand while preserving image quality and patient experience.
- Perform contrast-enhanced ultrasound studies where credentialed, following institutional policies for contrast administration, monitoring patients for adverse reactions, and documenting consent and outcomes.
- Participate in multidisciplinary rounds, case reviews, and tumor boards by presenting ultrasound findings, clarifying imaging limitations, and suggesting additional sonographic or complementary imaging when appropriate.
- Maintain professional credentials, complete continuing education requirements, and stay current with sonographic best practices, emerging techniques, and regulatory changes (ARDMS, CCI, state licensure requirements).
- Contribute to process improvement initiatives by identifying workflow inefficiencies, suggesting protocol standardization, and participating in pilot projects to implement new technologies or clinical pathways.
- Provide compassionate, culturally sensitive care to diverse patient populations, accommodating mobility limitations, language barriers, and special needs while ensuring dignity and privacy during sensitive exams.
- Adhere to billing and coding guidelines by documenting medical necessity, exam components, and diagnosis codes, supporting accurate reimbursement and compliance with payer regulations.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in inventory management for sonography supplies, transducer covers, sterile kits, and contrast media; place orders and reconcile supply usage to support uninterrupted clinical operations.
- Support departmental scheduling by communicating exam prep instructions to patients, verifying patient eligibility and insurance when required, and coordinating follow-up or additional imaging per provider requests.
- Participate in community outreach and patient education events to promote screening programs (e.g., carotid ultrasound clinics, prenatal imaging education) and enhance departmental visibility.
- Engage in research and clinical trials as needed by acquiring standardized imaging for protocol-driven studies, maintaining research documentation, and ensuring regulatory compliance.
- Serve on interdisciplinary committees for safety, infection control, and imaging governance to help shape policy and uphold clinical standards.
- Provide input for procurement and evaluation of new ultrasound equipment, including participating in vendor demonstrations, benchmarking image quality, and offering practical workflow feedback.
- Backup cross-coverage for adjacent imaging modalities (e.g., portable ultrasound for bedside studies, basic radiology support) when staffing support is required, following scope-of-practice and credentialing guidelines.
