Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Develop, maintain and execute the multi-year underwriting plan, aligning underwriting appetite, capacity, and growth targets with company strategy, capital constraints and reinsurance treaties to optimize portfolio performance.
- Design underwriting guidelines, submission acceptance criteria and referral rules, ensuring consistent application across channels and that policy issuance supports risk selection and pricing objectives.
- Perform portfolio segmentation and risk selection analysis using loss development, exposure metrics and predictive models to identify profitable growth opportunities and mitigate concentration risk.
- Collaborate with actuarial and pricing teams to translate rate indications, loss ratios and model outputs into actionable underwriting actions, quota changes and territory/product adjustments.
- Establish and monitor underwriting KPIs (loss ratio, combined ratio, hit rates, declination rates, average premium, retention) and produce weekly/monthly dashboards for underwriters and senior management.
- Lead capacity and resource planning for underwriting teams including quota allocation, line size determination, and delegated authority frameworks aligned to strategic objectives and compliance requirements.
- Conduct scenario and stress testing on underwriting plans to evaluate the impact of rate changes, catastrophe exposure, macroeconomic shifts and reinsurance programmes on portfolio profitability.
- Coordinate triage and escalation for complex, high-exposure or non-standard submissions; author and document binding decisions and special terms for high-value risks.
- Partner with distribution and brokerage teams to design go-to-market underwriting rules, producer scorecards and incentive structures that drive desired risk mix and premium quality.
- Implement and manage underwriting referral and exceptions process, including audit trail maintenance, exceptions approvals and periodic review of exception trends to reduce risk leakage.
- Build and present business cases for product launches, territory expansions or rate filings using robust financial projections, competitor benchmarking and regulatory impact analysis.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives across underwriting operations — simplify workflows, reduce cycle times, implement automation and enhance straight-through processing for standard business.
- Oversee delegated authority programs, third-party underwriting partners and MGAs — define SLAs, perform quality assurance reviews and maintain compliance with contractual obligations.
