Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Conduct comprehensive, statistically defensible audits of personal and commercial insurance underwriting files to assess adherence to company underwriting guidelines, pricing rules, and documented exceptions.
- Design, implement and maintain the underwriting audit program including sampling methodology, audit scope definitions, frequency schedules, confidence intervals and target error thresholds to ensure representative and repeatable results.
- Evaluate risk selection, policy coverage, endorsements, limits, exclusions, and rating application to identify deviations from underwriting manuals and delegated authority standards.
- Perform detailed documentation reviews to verify completeness of file notes, authority approvals, underwriting memoranda, inspection reports, and required regulatory disclosures.
- Score underwriting files using standardized scorecards and rubric criteria; apply consistent scoring practices and calibrate scores across auditors to maintain inter-rater reliability.
- Prepare timely, concise audit reports and executive summaries that highlight critical findings, quantify error rates, and prioritize remediation opportunities for underwriting leadership.
- Conduct root cause analysis for recurring underwriting errors using Pareto analysis, trend identification, and process mapping to recommend durable corrective actions.
- Monitor and report on key quality metrics (e.g., error rate, severity, turnaround time, adherence to guidelines) and present actionable dashboards to senior management using data visualization tools.
- Collaborate directly with underwriting managers and regional leaders to develop and track corrective action plans, including time-bound milestones, ownership and measurable outcomes.
- Provide targeted coaching and feedback sessions to underwriters and underwriting supervisors based on audit findings, using examples to demonstrate correct application of guidelines and authority limits.
- Maintain a current understanding of regulatory requirements, state insurance statutes, and company policy changes to ensure audits reflect compliance obligations.
- Review bind/quote-to-bind workflows and endorsement/cancellation processing to identify control gaps that could lead to coverage or compliance exposure.
- Validate producer/agent appointment documentation, authority limits, and submission routing to detect potential distribution and delegation risks.
- Work with Data Analytics and IT to define and validate data pulls, create audit-ready data extracts, and verify automated underwriting decision rules and model results.
- Lead special investigations for high-severity or systemic underwriting exceptions, coordinating with Compliance, Legal and Risk teams as necessary.
- Develop and maintain audit templates, playbooks, process flows, and training materials to standardize audit execution and accelerate onboarding of new auditors.
- Conduct periodic calibration sessions with underwriting leadership to align expectations on risk appetite, discretionary authority and escalation thresholds.
- Track remediation effectiveness by re-auditing previously failed files, documenting improvements, and updating risk registers to inform senior leadership decisions.
- Support rate and rule change implementations by auditing pre- and post-implementation files to ensure correct application of new rating logic and to quantify unintended exceptions.
- Assist in vendor and third-party review processes by auditing outsourced underwriting decisions or delegated authority partners for consistency with company standards.
- Ensure segregation of duties and audit independence by maintaining objective audit processes and escalating any identified conflicts of interest.
- Maintain detailed, audit-ready documentation and evidence retention to support internal and external reviews, examinations, or regulatory inquiries.
- Identify opportunities to automate routine audit tasks through scripting, macros or integration with audit management platforms and collaborate on proof-of-concept solutions.
Secondary Functions
- Support ad-hoc underwriting quality requests, including targeted audits after major policy changes, acquisitions, or regulatory alerts.
- Contribute to the organization’s underwriting quality roadmap by recommending process improvements, technology enhancements and training investments.

Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)

- Experience designing and executing audit programs, including statistical sampling, test design, scoring methodologies and audit documentation.
- Proficiency with audit management platforms and workflows (e.g., TeamMate, AuditBoard) or ability to adapt to similar QA tooling.
- Strong Excel skills (pivot tables, advanced formulas, Power Query) for analyzing audit results and producing scorecards.
- Familiarity with data extraction and validation using SQL or working closely with data teams to validate datasets.

Educational Background
Minimum Education:
