Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Design, implement and maintain a structured underwriting quality assurance program that includes sampling methodology, scorecards, audit protocols, and periodic review cycles to objectively measure underwriting adherence to policy and appetite.
- Conduct systematic file reviews and audits of underwriting files across personal lines, commercial lines or specialty products to assess compliance with underwriting guidelines, credit terms, delegated authorities and pricing accuracy.
- Develop and execute statistically valid sampling plans and control charts to detect underwriting drift, trends, and areas of elevated risk or non-compliance, ensuring findings are representative and actionable.
- Produce clear, timely management information (MI) packs and dashboards (weekly/monthly/quarterly) that quantify underwriting quality, trends, root causes, remediation status, and financial leakage for senior stakeholders.
- Lead root cause analysis (RCA) investigations on recurring underwriting errors or exceptions, synthesizing qualitative and quantitative evidence to recommend sustainable corrective actions.
- Partner with underwriting leadership to translate audit findings into targeted remediation plans, including changes to guidelines, authority matrices, job aids, training curricula and workflow automation opportunities.
- Deliver training, coaching and calibration sessions for underwriters and underwriting managers to align interpretation of policy, pricing strategies, endorsement handling and documentation standards, improving consistency and risk selection.
- Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and service level agreements (SLAs) for underwriting quality, turnaround times, documentation completeness and adherence to delegated authority.
- Oversee the remediation and action-tracking process, prioritizing high-impact issues, verifying fixes, and reporting closure status to governance forums.
- Ensure underwriting quality frameworks are aligned to regulatory requirements, internal risk appetite, Solvency and capital considerations (where applicable), and external audit expectations.
- Collaborate with Compliance, Legal, Claims and Risk teams to ensure underwriting decisions and exclusions are defensible, documented and reflect changes in regulatory guidance or market conditions.
- Maintain up-to-date underwriting policy documentation and issue guidance notes, exceptions logs and clarification bulletins to prevent recurring errors and reduce discretion misalignment.
- Identify and quantify financial leakage, mispricing or erosion of policy language attributable to underwriting actions, and work with finance and actuarial teams to model impact and remediation benefit.
- Design and maintain quality scorecards and grading frameworks that capture severity and frequency of findings, enable benchmarking across teams and product lines, and feed into incentive and development plans.
- Support delegated authority reviews and cessations, including due diligence on brokers, coverholders and distribution partners to ensure continued compliance with underwriting standards.
- Use underwriting data, dashboards and analytics (including Excel, SQL, BI tools) to proactively identify anomalies, outliers and systemic issues requiring immediate investigation or policy updates.
- Participate in new product and delegated scheme approvals to embed quality controls, pre-issue checklists and required documentation standards before launch.
- Coordinate the preparation and presentation of underwriting quality reviews for governance forums, audit committees and executive sponsorship, ensuring transparency and accountability for remediation.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives using Lean, Six Sigma or similar methodologies to streamline underwriting workflows, reduce handoffs and minimize error-prone manual tasks.
- Manage relationships with external auditors and third-party reviewers during underwriting quality reviews, ensuring timely access to required documentation and clear responses to findings.
- Implement quality assurance controls for digital underwriting channels and straight-through-processing (STP) flows to ensure automation does not introduce uncontrolled risk.
- Maintain a library of exemplar files, best-practice templates and case studies to support learning and uplift across the underwriting population.
