Ideal candidates demonstrate precision, fabric knowledge, experience with CAD marker systems (Gerber, Lectra or similar), and the ability to work in a fast-paced production environment while maintaining safety and yield targets.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Career Progression

Typical Career Path

Entry Point From:

  • Cutting Room Assistant / Fabric Handler
  • Sewing Machine Operator or Production Operator
  • Pattern Trimmer or Sample Room Assistant

Advancement To:

  • Senior Cutter / Lead Cutter
  • Cutting Room Supervisor or Cutting Manager
  • Production Manager / Operations Manager

Lateral Moves:

  • Pattern Maker / Marker Technician
  • Quality Control Inspector / Garment Technologist

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Read and interpret patterns, markers, tech packs and cutting instructions to accurately cut uniform panels to specification, ensuring pieces align with grading, notches, and match points.
  • Set up, operate and maintain cutting equipment including straight knives, band knives, clicker presses, die-cutting machines and CNC cutting tables (Gerber, Lectra or other digital cutters) while following manufacturer guidelines and plant safety procedures.
  • Create and optimize markers by hand or using CAD/CAM marker-making software to maximize fabric yield, reduce waste, and meet cost-per-piece targets for uniform programs.
  • Accurately lay out fabric and handle grainlines, repeat patterns and directional prints to ensure correct pattern matching for seams and plaids across all uniform components.
  • Cut single-piece samples and full production lots to the specified tolerances and quality standards, adjusting techniques for different fabrics such as woven, knit, laminated or multi-layer materials.
  • Verify material type, width and quantity against cutting tickets and BOMs, performing fabric counts and roll tracking to prevent shortages or overuse.
  • Inspect cut parts for quality defects (mis-cuts, missing notches, incorrect orientation) and document discrepancies using the plantโ€™s quality reporting system for corrective action.
  • Perform knife sharpening, blade changes and routine preventative maintenance on cutting equipment and coordinate repairs with maintenance as needed to minimize downtime.
  • Follow production schedules and prioritize cutting runs to meet shipment dates, escalating scheduling conflicts or material issues to the cutting lead or production planner.
  • Collaborate with pattern makers and graders to advise on pattern adjustments, seam allowances and marker changes required to improve fit or reduce fabric consumption.
  • Maintain cutting-room records including yield reports, cut counts, material usage logs and waste reports to support inventory control and continuous improvement metrics.
  • Train and mentor junior cutters and cutting-room assistants on safe machine operation, proper cutting techniques and quality inspection standards.
  • Prepare, label and stage cut components for downstream sewing operations, ensuring parts are bundled, tagged and sequenced according to production flow and assembly tickets.
  • Implement and comply with safety protocols including lockout/tagout, PPE usage, ergonomic best practices, and material handling procedures to reduce risk and maintain a safe work area.
  • Execute sample cut revisions for fit sessions and prototyping, incorporating pattern updates quickly and accurately into production markers.
  • Assist with knife/die inventory and requisitioning spare parts, cutting tools and consumables to maintain uninterrupted operations and cost control.
  • Support lean manufacturing initiatives by suggesting layout or workflow improvements in the cutting room to reduce motion, shorten lead time and improve throughput.
  • Perform nesting and multi-layer cutting for bulk production, monitoring layer counts and compression to ensure even cuts and consistent part quality across layers.
  • Coordinate with quality assurance and production planners to quarantine defective batches, perform root cause analysis and apply corrective/preventive actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Document and enforce labeling, batch control and traceability for cut bundles to ensure complete lot tracking from cutting to finished uniform delivery.
  • Adjust marker layouts and cutting parameters to accommodate fabric variations, shrinkage allowances and special finishes (waterproof coatings, flame retardant treatments) that affect handling.

Secondary Functions

  • Support sample room activities by assisting pattern makers and sample sewers during development runs and prototypes.
  • Participate in cross-functional continuous improvement projects (5S, Kaizen, SMED) to improve cutting room efficiency and reduce defect rates.
  • Assist with receiving and inspecting incoming fabric rolls for width, defects and dye lot consistency prior to cutting.
  • Maintain a clean, organized cutting area and manage waste segregation for recycling or proper disposal.
  • Provide input to production planning on realistic cutting throughput and material lead times based on historical performance and equipment capacity.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient pattern reading and interpretation of tech packs, notches, grainlines and grading rules specific to uniform construction.
