Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Interpret and execute technical specifications, tech packs, and engineering drawings to construct uniforms to exact tolerances, sizes, and performance requirements, ensuring compliance with military, public safety, or corporate standards.
- Operate a broad range of industrial sewing machines (e.g., single-needle, double-needle, overlock/serger, blind hem, bartack, post-bed, cylinder-arm) to produce consistent, production-level stitching and assemblies.
- Perform precise garment alterations and repairs including hems, waistband adjustments, inseam/outseam modifications, sleeve tailoring, and tapering while maintaining pattern integrity and fit lines.
- Set up and calibrate sewing machines and attachments (walking foot, binder, zipper foot, buttonhole machines) for specific operations, threading, tensioning, and stitch length adjustments to suit fabric and design.
- Execute complex hand-sewing techniques (pad stitching, ladder stitch, slip stitch, hand tack, button sewing) on trims, badges, insignia, and delicate finishes that cannot be completed by machine.
- Read, measure, and mark fabrics and garments using tape measures, rulers, pattern notches, and grading rules; perform accurate layup and cutting for small-batch production and repair work.
- Construct and assemble multi-component garments (jackets, trousers, polos, outerwear, tactical vests) including interfacing, linings, zippers, pockets, epaulets, and reinforced seams to specification.
- Produce and fit prototypes and samples in collaboration with pattern makers and product development teams; provide constructive feedback to improve fit, manufacturability, and cost-efficiency.
- Perform in-line and final quality inspections for seam integrity, stitch density, dimensional accuracy, trim placement, and aesthetic finish; record defects and corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate production records, alteration tickets, work orders and WIP documentation in paper or electronic systems (ERP/MRP), ensuring traceability from incoming order to shipping.
- Apply knowledge of fabric behavior (wool, polyester-wool blends, ripstop, Cordura, cotton twill, ripstop nylon, waterproof laminates) to select appropriate needles, thread types, seam finishes, and interfacing.
- Implement and follow work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and first-article inspection protocols to ensure repeatable, compliant output.
- Set up and execute bar tack, reinforcing, and rivet operations for high-stress points on uniforms and gear to meet durability standards.
- Attach specialty items such as reflective tape, hook-and-loop (Velcro), rank insignia, embroidered patches, and sewn-on hardware per placement diagrams and customer requirements.
- Conduct quality root-cause analysis and corrective actions for recurring sewing or fit issues; escalate patterns or design concerns to engineering or product development teams.
- Maintain equipment uptime through routine preventive maintenance, minor repairs (replacing needles, presser feet, bobbins), and escalation of larger mechanical issues to maintenance technicians.
- Apply finishing processes including pressing/ironing, steaming, trimming, clipping, and final folding/packaging to ensure garments ship in factory-finished condition.
- Meet production targets and deadlines while balancing priority rush alterations, repair work, and scheduled production runs; manage multiple work tickets concurrently.
- Train and mentor junior machinists and sewing operators on techniques, machine setup, safety standards, and company quality expectations.
- Follow safety, PPE, and chemical handling procedures when working with adhesives, flame-retardant treatments, or stain-resistant coatings; maintain a clean, organized workstation per 5S principles.
- Coordinate with inventory and cutting teams to confirm materials, trims, and hardware availability; document shortages and recommend substitute materials when appropriate.
- Support customer fittings and on-site measurement sessions; advise on fit corrections, alteration feasibility, and lead-time impacts to customer service or sales teams.
Secondary Functions
- Assist product development and technical design teams by creating detailed notes and modification recommendations during fit sessions and prototype builds.
- Help maintain a digital archive of standard operating procedures, machine settings, and sample photos for future reference and training.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives (lean manufacturing, 5S, kaizen) to reduce rework, optimize layout, and increase first-pass yield.
- Support inventory audits for threads, zippers, buttons, and specialty trims; notify purchasing of low-stock critical items for uniform production.
- Contribute to development of training materials and mentored on-boarding plans for new sewing staff and alterations personnel.
- Collaborate with customer service and sales on scope-of-work questions related to alterations, customizations, and warranty repairs for uniforms.
- Help coordinate outsourced services (embroidery, specialty coating, hardware plating) and verify vendor output against company specifications.
- Assist with sample costing and time studies to inform standard times and labor estimates used for job quoting and scheduling.
- Participate in safety audits, machine risk assessments, and report near-misses or equipment hazards to the supervisor.
- Provide occasional cross-functional support in cutting, pressing, or packing during peak production periods.
