Primary Functions

  • Operate and maintain industrial sewing equipment (lockstitch, overlock/serger, buttonholer, coverstitch, walking foot machines) including routine lubrication, needle and thread changes, tension adjustments, and minor troubleshooting to minimize downtime.
  • Conduct finishing operations such as pressing, steaming, and quality inspection to deliver garments that meet customer appearance standards and return-packaging requirements.

  • Perform minor upholstery or padding repairs on items such as protective vests, kneepads, and seat covers per manufacturer guidelines, ensuring structural integrity and user safety.
  • Clean and prepare garments prior to repair when required (spot cleaning, pre-wash) to prevent contamination and to ensure accurate assessment of damage versus soil-related appearance issues.
  • Apply embroidered patches, name tapes, insignia, and rank badges using sewing or heat-press techniques consistent with organization-specific placement and retention requirements.
  • Adhere strictly to hazardous-materials handling and disposal procedures when repairing garments contaminated with oils, chemicals, or biohazards; coordinate with safety teams for special handling and documentation.
  • Follow and help refine standard operating procedures (SOPs), quality checklists, and inspection criteria to continuously improve repair quality, reduce rework, and preserve warranty/compliance obligations.
  • Estimate labor and parts costs for non-routine repairs and communicate quotes to supervisors or customers; track cost recovery and center profitability for work orders.
  • Participate in regular equipment safety checks and report defects to maintenance; coordinate scheduled preventive maintenance to extend the life of sewing and pressing equipment.
  • Support pickup/delivery logistics and customer handoff processes, verifying garment lists, tracking chain-of-custody for sensitive or government-issued uniforms, and ensuring confidentiality where required.
