Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Operate multiple types of production equipment (e.g., CNC mills/lathes, injection molding machines, stamping presses, grinders, saws, and automated assembly cells) safely and efficiently to meet daily production quotas and takt time.
- Perform machine setup and changeovers including tooling installation, fixture alignment, and program selection to minimize downtime and ensure first-piece quality on each run.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, work orders, routing sheets, and specifications to confirm correct part numbers, tolerances, and finish requirements prior to production start.
- Calibrate and verify gauges, micrometers, calipers, height gauges and other measurement tools; conduct first-article inspections and maintain accurate inspection records.
- Monitor machine performance and process parameters (feed rates, speeds, pressures, temperatures) and make precise adjustments to maintain product dimensions and surface finish within quality tolerances.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and control issues at the operator level and perform basic troubleshooting and corrective actions to restore equipment operation; escalate complex issues to maintenance or engineering.
- Execute preventive maintenance tasks and basic custodial maintenance (lubrication, filter changes, belt/chain checks, replacing worn inserts) according to maintenance schedules and checklists.
- Follow and enforce all safety procedures, lockout/tagout (LOTO), PPE requirements and OSHA/industry regulations to maintain a safe work environment for self and team members.
- Record production data, scrap quantities, downtime reasons and production yields in electronic systems or logbooks; use data to support continuous improvement and problem-solving activities.
- Perform in-process quality checks using SPC techniques, gauges, and visual inspections; hold materials that do not conform and work with Quality Engineering to disposition nonconforming product.
- Conduct line-side change documentation and ensure accurate bill of materials (BOM) and setup sheets are current for each run to prevent production errors and material waste.
- Collaborate with process engineers and tooling technicians on root cause analysis, corrective action plans and implementation of mistake-proofing devices to improve first pass yield.
- Train and mentor new operators on safe machine operation, proper setup procedures, inspection methods and company SOPs to maintain team competency and reduce errors.
- Participate in shift handovers by communicating outstanding issues, ongoing corrective actions, and production priorities to ensure continuity between shifts.
- Assist in implementing lean manufacturing principles such as 5S, Kaizen, SMED (single-minute exchange of dies), and value stream mapping to reduce changeover time and increase overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
- Load, unload, and stage raw materials, consumables, and finished goods; operate forklifts or pallet jacks safely when required and follow proper material handling procedures.
- Conduct cycle counts, confirm inventory accuracy for critical tooling and spare parts, and notify procurement of low stock that would impact production.
- Apply basic PLC or machine control screen navigation to monitor alarms, review fault histories, and clear recoverable faults in coordination with controls engineers.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the work cell and surrounding area, ensuring tools, fixtures, and consumables are stored and labeled correctly to support quick setups and audits.
- Support pilot builds, prototype runs, and production ramp-ups by validating processes, documenting lessons learned and providing feedback to product development teams.
- Ensure environmental, health and safety (EHS) compliance related to chemical handling, waste disposal, and equipment guards; participate in incident investigations and corrective actions.
- Engage in continuous learning to stay current on equipment changes, new tooling, and process updates; attend training and certification courses as assigned.
- Communicate proactively with supervisors, maintenance, quality and engineering to escalate production impediments and coordinate timely resolutions to prevent lost production.
- Execute special projects such as facility relocation of equipment, rework campaigns, or temporary process changes with clear documentation and quality controls.

Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)

- Mechanical troubleshooting and basic electrical/controls familiarity (PLC reading and HMI navigation).
- Precision measurement and inspection using calipers, micrometers, gage blocks, height gages and optical comparators.

Education & Experience
Educational Background
Minimum Education:

- Manufacturer-specific training or certifications (CNC programming, Injection Molding certification, OSHA 10, forklift certification) are advantageous.
