Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Plan and execute scheduled equipment upgrades, retrofits, and capital improvement tasks following approved change control, work instructions, and project plans to minimize production downtime and maintain product quality.
  • Perform mechanical disassembly and reassembly of production equipment components, including alignment, torqueing, mechanical calibration, and adjustment according to engineering drawings and OEM procedures.
  • Execute electrical and control-system upgrades, including replacement of PLC modules, wiring harnesses, sensors, actuators, and fieldbus components, ensuring proper grounding, ESD protection, and signal integrity.
  • Install, configure, and validate firmware and software updates on tool controllers, PLCs, HMIs, and ancillary controllers; run post-upgrade software verification and version control.
  • Conduct pre-upgrade risk assessments and lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures to ensure personnel safety and regulatory compliance during upgrade activities.
  • Execute post-upgrade verification and qualification protocols (IQ/OQ/PQ) in partnership with process engineers and quality assurance, documenting results and driving closure of non-conformances.
  • Troubleshoot complex equipment and process issues that arise during upgrades using multimeters, oscilloscopes, calibration tools, and diagnostic software; escalate unresolved issues to engineering.
  • Maintain and update equipment configuration records, BOMs, as-built drawings, and MES/SAP entries to reflect changes made during upgrades and retrofits.
  • Coordinate cross-functional activities with Process Engineering, Quality, Production, EHS, Materials, and Facilities to align upgrade schedules with manufacturing needs and parts availability.
  • Execute preventive maintenance tasks and post-upgrade inspections to confirm mechanical integrity, cleanliness, and operational readiness prior to returning tools to production.
  • Manage spare parts and tool kits for upgrade projects, performing kitting, inventory reconciliation, and requisitioning of critical long-lead items.
  • Perform contamination control and cleanroom gowning procedures when working on tools in controlled environments, ensuring adherence to particle and chemical handling protocols.
  • Implement and follow statistical process control (SPC) checkpoints and yield monitors to verify that upgrades do not adversely affect product specifications or performance metrics.
  • Document root-cause analyses and corrective actions following upgrade-related failures, participating in CAPA or continuous improvement initiatives to prevent recurrence.
  • Assist in the development and revision of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and change control documentation to capture lessons learned from upgrade execution.
  • Train junior operators and technicians on upgraded equipment, new operating sequences, safety protocols, and troubleshooting best practices to ensure consistent team capability.
  • Execute equipment calibration and instrumentation checks after upgrades, coordinating with calibration labs and contractors as needed to maintain measurement integrity.
  • Coordinate with external vendors and OEM service teams for warranty upgrades, vendor-supplied software patches, and complex mechanical/electrical interventions, ensuring vendor work meets company standards.
  • Monitor upgrade-related KPIs — including mean time to repair (MTTR), mean time between failures (MTBF), upgrade lead time, and yield impact — and report outcomes to stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, health, and safety (EHS) regulations during upgrade activities, including chemical handling, confined space rules, and hazardous energy control.
  • Participate in project kickoff meetings and provide practical input on constructability, required manpower, estimated downtime, and risk mitigation strategies for upgrade projects.
  • Validate safety interlocks, emergency stops, and protective systems following mechanical or control changes; conduct functional safety checks prior to production restart.
  • Perform mechanical and electrical alignment checks using laser alignment tools, dial indicators, and precision measurement devices to ensure tool performance post-upgrade.
  • Manage change control packages from initiation through approval, implementation, and closure, ensuring complete traceability and documentation for audits.
  • Support continuous improvement by identifying upgrade opportunities, cost-saving measures, and reliability improvements based on observed failure modes or aging equipment trends.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED with technical coursework (electronics, mechanical shop, or industrial maintenance).

Preferred Education:

  • Associate degree or technical diploma in Electronics Technology, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  • Certifications in PLCs, industrial automation, or mechanical maintenance are a plus.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2–5 years of hands-on experience performing equipment upgrades, maintenance, or field service on production machinery.

Preferred: 3–7 years of experience in a high-reliability manufacturing environment (semiconductor, medical devices, aerospace, or advanced manufacturing) with documented upgrade and validation experience, cleanroom exposure, and familiarity with MES/CMMS systems.
