Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Read, interpret, and verify technical pattern pieces, marker sheets and job tickets to accurately lay out and cut fabrics, leather, vinyl, foam, and composite materials to required dimensions and tolerances for furniture, automotive, or marine upholstery orders.
- Set up and operate hand and powered cutting equipment—including industrial shears, straight knives, clicker presses, band knives, and CNC/plotter cutting systems—ensuring correct blade selection, tension, speed and alignment for each material type.
- Perform pattern layout and marker-making tasks to maximize fabric yield and reduce waste, applying knowledge of nap, directional prints, grain, stretch, and defect avoidance to optimize material consumption and cost-efficiency.
- Measure and mark materials precisely using rulers, tape measures, templates, chalks, and digital measuring systems to ensure seam allowances, notches, and match points align with sewing and assembly requirements.
- Cut foam cores, laminated foams, and specialized cushioning using bandsaws, knife cutters, or CNC foam routers while maintaining dimensional accuracy, consistent edge quality, and material integrity.
- Maintain production throughput by sequencing cutting orders, prioritizing work based on production schedules and communicating status updates to sewing room leads and production planners.
- Inspect cut parts for dimensional accuracy, pattern alignment, seam allowance consistency, and visible material defects; reject and document parts that fail to meet specifications and recommend corrective actions.
- Trim and notch cut components as required to assist seamstresses and assemblers with ease of construction, ensuring accurate placement of zippers, welting, piping, and hardware cutouts.
- Prepare cut bundles and kits, labeling each bundle with part identification, quantity, fabric type, color lot and job number to maintain traceability and streamline downstream assembly.
- Maintain and adjust cutting jigs, templates, and dies; sharpen, replace or maintain blades and tooling on a regular preventative schedule to ensure clean cuts and minimize material damage.
- Collaborate with patternmakers and designers to advise on fabric behavior, propose pattern adjustments to improve fit or yield, and provide feedback during prototype and sample stages.
- Operate computerized cutting software (CAD/CAM) to import marker files, nest patterns, and control automated cutters; verify digital files against physical patterns and job orders.
- Record material usage, scrap rates, and production metrics in cutting logs or MES systems; contribute accurate inventory consumption data to purchasing and inventory teams.
- Follow workplace safety protocols, including proper blade handling, machine guarding, PPE usage, and material lifting techniques to minimize accidents and maintain regulatory compliance.
- Train and mentor junior cutters and cutting-room assistants on best practices, machine operation, quality standards, and efficient layout techniques to build a capable, consistent cutting team.
- Conduct regular material inspections when receiving rolls or sheets—checking color, lot, nap, defects and roll tension—and segregate materials that do not meet job specifications to prevent rework.
- Apply adhesives, interlinings, or backing materials to fabric or foam where required before cutting, ensuring proper bonding and dimensional stability when parts are assembled.
- Troubleshoot cutting issues such as blade wander, material shifting, or machine calibration and coordinate with maintenance or engineering for repairs and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain a clean, organized cutting area, including safe storage of sharp tools, orderly stacking of rolls and cut parts, and compliance with 5S and lean manufacturing standards.
- Participate in pre-production meetings to review BOMs, material allocations, and special cutting instructions, and contribute to time estimates and setup time calculations for job quoting.
- Implement and maintain practices for color and pattern matching across cut parts, using digital or visual checks to ensure consistent aesthetic outcomes for multi-piece covers or matched seams.
Secondary Functions
- Assist inventory and receiving teams by verifying and staging incoming rolls and materials for scheduled production runs to reduce line delays.
- Prepare and maintain cutting templates, sample parts and reference pieces for future production runs and quality audits.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by documenting common defects, proposing process changes to reduce scrap and improve yield, and participating in Kaizen events.
