Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead concept-to-production design for upholstered products, creating mood boards, concept sketches, and design narratives that align with brand direction and market trends.
  • Develop detailed technical drawings and measurements for upholstery patterns, including flat patterns, seam and allowance specifications, and staging out fit sequences for manufacturing.
  • Specify fabrics, leathers, foams, batting, springs, webbing, adhesives, trims, and finishing materials with full justifications for performance, cost, and sustainability.
  • Create and refine physical prototypes and first articles, working hands-on with sample technicians to iterate fit, comfort, visual appearance, and manufacturability.
  • Produce clear bill of materials (BOM), cutting layouts, marker plans, and production packets that enable consistent factory-level execution.
  • Work directly with CAD tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Rhino, SketchUp, or upholstery-specific pattern software) to generate accurate templates, nesting plans, and digital patterns for production.
  • Conduct ergonomic and comfort assessments, specifying cushion density, foam profiles, spring support systems, and suspension to achieve design intent and comfort targets.
  • Oversee pattern grading and scaling for product families and multiple size points, ensuring design integrity across variants.
  • Collaborate with sourcing and vendor teams to identify and qualify textile mills, leather suppliers, foam fabricators, and trim vendors, including sample evaluation and cost negotiation.
  • Translate customer and buyer feedback into iterative design updates, addressing durability issues, stain resistance, wear testing results, and warranty-related concerns.
  • Develop and implement quality control checkpoints for in-line and final inspections to ensure finished upholstery meets dimensional tolerances, seam strength, and aesthetic standards.
  • Create and maintain a material library and sample archive, documenting performance data, care instructions, compliance certifications, and supplier lead times.
  • Prepare tech packs and production-ready documentation for domestic and offshore factories, ensuring clear communication of construction methods, seam sequences, and assembly order.
  • Provide installation specifications and field guidance for large projects (e.g., contract furniture, hospitality installs) including on-site pattern adjustments and final fit validation.
  • Support cost modeling and price engineering by selecting alternative materials, optimizing cutting layouts, and simplifying construction without compromising design intent.
  • Train and mentor sample room staff, junior designers, and upholstery technicians on pattern interpretation, assembly techniques, seam finishing, and quality expectations.
  • Lead fit trials and pilot production runs, collating data from wear tests, stress tests, and consumer trials to recommend corrective actions before full production.
  • Ensure all upholstery designs meet regulatory and safety standards relevant to markets served, such as fire retardancy, chemical restrictions (e.g., AWI, CAL TB117, EN standards), and labeling requirements.
  • Troubleshoot production issues in collaboration with manufacturing teams—addressing defects such as puckering, misaligned seams, sagging, and incorrect tolerance adherence—and implement corrective actions.
  • Manage timelines and deliverables across cross-functional teams including design, engineering, purchasing, and logistics to meet seasonal and launch deadlines.
  • Drive sustainability initiatives in upholstery design: specify recycled or low-VOC materials, propose modular/upcyclable construction approaches, and document environmental claims for product marketing.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain and update the upholstery pattern and sample database ensuring version control and traceability for revisions and production history.
  • Support product marketing and sales with technical content, fabric care guides, and photography direction for upholstery finishes and detail shots.
  • Conduct supplier audits and sample quality reviews, providing actionable feedback to improve vendor capabilities and consistency.
  • Assist in showroom and trade show preparation with staging, product setup, and installation of upholstered pieces to showcase new design directions.
  • Collaborate with R&D on new material technologies (e.g., performance textiles, bio-based foams) and advise on manufacturability at scale.
  • Participate in cost-reduction programs by identifying redundant processes, recommending stitch or component consolidation, and optimizing assembly sequences.
  • Facilitate communication between design and production during pilot production to expedite problem resolution and ensure smooth ramp-up.
  • Document standard operating procedures (SOPs) for upholstery construction steps, inspection criteria, and finishing treatments.
  • Provide post-sale technical support to dealers and installers for complex upholstery repairs, reupholstery guidance, and warranty assessments.
  • Coordinate with maintenance teams to ensure tools, presses, and sewing machines are set up and calibrated to achieve consistent stitch quality and seam performance.
