Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Produce high-quality upholstered products by accurately measuring, laying out and cutting fabric, leather and vinyl from specifications, patterns or templates; ensure optimal grain alignment, pattern matching and efficient material utilization to minimize waste and cost.
  • Create, modify and interpret upholstery patterns and templates (paper, cardboard, digital) for new builds and repairs; translate design sketches and technical drawings into production-ready patterns that ensure proper fit and finish.
  • Operate industrial sewing equipment (cylinder-bed, post-bed, walking foot, serger, heavy-duty machines) to assemble covers, welt cords, piping, tufting and specialized seams; set machine tensions, change needles and maintain machine calibration for consistent stitch quality.
  • Prepare and shape foam, batting and fiberfill using knives, hot-wire cutters, CNC foam routers and moulding techniques; glue, laminate and contour foam components to specified thicknesses and densities for ergonomic support and design conformity.
  • Perform frame repairs and modifications including wood and metal subframes, webbing replacement, spring systems, and reinforcing structures; use hand and power tools to remove, repair and reinstall components safely and to spec.
  • Attach upholstery to frames using adhesives, staples, tacks, hog rings, and stitching; ensure proper alignment, tension and finish quality while avoiding visible defects and ensuring structural integrity.
  • Install and trim gimp, piping, binding, buttons, zippers, snaps and Velcro; execute precise handwork for decorative finishes, tufting and buttoning with uniform spacing and tension.
  • Conduct final quality inspections on pieces to verify seam integrity, stitch counts, material alignment, color consistency, and absence of blemishes; document defects and perform rework to meet or exceed company quality standards and client expectations.
  • Read and follow engineering drawings, BOMs (bill of materials), cut lists and order tickets; collaborate with production planners to prioritize jobs, sequence operations and meet delivery timelines.
  • Work with designers and customers to develop custom upholstery solutions, provide material recommendations (fabric type, grade, abrasion ratings), advise on durability and maintenance, and produce samples or mockups for approval.
  • Maintain material inventory, track fabric yardage, label and store scrap, and submit material reorder requests; optimize nesting and cutting layouts to reduce consumption and support cost control.
  • Operate specialized equipment such as pneumatic staple guns, hog ring pliers, tufting machines, webbing stretchers and pneumatic presses while adhering to safety protocols and PPE requirements.
  • Prepare and install adhesives, contact cement and waterproofing treatments where required; ensure proper curing times and ventilation standards are followed to protect product integrity and worker health.
  • Execute upholstery for specialized markets (automotive, marine, aviation, healthcare, hospitality) by applying industry-specific standards, meeting regulatory requirements and selecting appropriate materials for flame resistance, UV stability and moisture resistance.
  • Train and mentor junior fabricators and apprentices on sewing techniques, pattern interpretation, machine operation and shop safety; support skills development documentation and standard operating procedures.
  • Troubleshoot sewing, fitting and assembly problems during production, identify root causes (machine, process, material), implement corrective measures and document process improvements to reduce rework and scrap.
  • Ensure all completed work is packaged, labeled and documented for shipment or installation; coordinate with shipping and installation teams to schedule deliveries and onsite fitments.
  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of sewing machines, cutters and shop equipment; replace worn parts and coordinate repairs with maintenance to minimize downtime.
  • Maintain a clean, organized and safe work area; comply with company safety standards including safe lifting, machine guarding, chemical handling (adhesives) and waste disposal procedures.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives—lean manufacturing activities, 5S, value stream mapping—and contribute ideas to improve throughput, reduce defects and increase customer satisfaction.
  • Estimate labor hours and material requirements for standard and custom upholstery jobs; assist production management in quoting and job costing by providing accurate time and material assessments.

Secondary Functions

  • Support custom prototyping and small-batch production runs, producing samples and first articles for approval.
  • Collaborate with procurement to assess material quality, evaluate new fabric and trim vendors, and test new textiles and foam products for production viability.
  • Assist installation teams for onsite fitting, tack-in adjustments and final trim work at client locations when required.
  • Document non-conformances, maintain job records and update production tracking systems to ensure traceability and continuous quality feedback.
  • Participate in seasonal workload planning and cross-train across adjacent production areas (sewing, foam shop, trim) to provide flexible capacity.
  • Engage with customers and project managers during handovers to explain care instructions, warranty conditions and maintenance recommendations.
