Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Read and interpret work orders, technical drawings, patterns and material specification sheets to plan upholstery tasks and sequence work to meet production schedules while minimizing waste.
  • Layout, mark and cut fabric, vinyl and leather using hand tools and powered cutting machines (band knives, clicker press, CNC/automated cutters) ensuring grain alignment and efficient material utilization.
  • Operate industrial sewing machines (walking foot, post-bed, cylinder-bed, heavy-duty lockstitch/overlock) to sew covers, seams, welt, piping and zippers to specified tolerances and appearance standards.
  • Build and assemble cushions and seats by measuring and cutting foam, applying foam adhesive, inserting webbing and springs, and securing cover materials to achieve specified comfort, resilience and dimensional tolerances.
  • Fasten upholstery to frames using pneumatic staple guns, tacking irons, hog rings and hand stitching while ensuring secure attachment, correct tufting, pleating and alignment for finished product durability.
  • Pattern and templates creation: trace, adjust and modify patterns and templates to accommodate design changes, repair requirements or special order specifications while documenting revisions for reproducibility.
  • Inspect incoming materials (fabrics, foams, springs, adhesives, frames) for defects, color matching and conformance to specifications and report non-conformances to purchasing or quality teams.
  • Execute trim and finishing operations including welt application, button tufting, edge wrapping, blind-stitching and piping to produce clean, production-quality seams and aesthetic finishes.
  • Perform repair and rework operations on damaged or non-conforming upholstery components by diagnosing issues, selecting remedial techniques and executing corrections to avoid scrapping.
  • Calibrate and maintain sewing and cutting equipment, change needles, blades and tension settings, and perform routine cleaning and minor adjustments to sustain production uptime.
  • Follow ergonomic best practices and safe handling procedures when lifting heavy foam blocks, frames or assemblies; use lifting aids and team-lift techniques to prevent injuries and damage to materials.
  • Apply adhesives and laminates to fabrics and foams using hand or spray application systems with proper ventilation and PPE, ensuring bond strength and avoiding cosmetic damage.
  • Coordinate with foam fabrication, wood shop and finishing teams to sequence work, communicate lead times and resolve production bottlenecks to meet customer delivery dates.
  • Document production data, time logs, scrap rates and defect types accurately in production records or digital systems to support continuous improvement and traceability.
  • Train and mentor junior upholstery operators and apprentices on sewing techniques, tool usage, quality expectations and safety practices to maintain workforce capability and consistency.
  • Participate in quality assurance checks and first-article inspections, providing objective measurements and photographic documentation for sign-off on new styles or customer samples.
  • Support product development by providing practical input on manufacturability, fabric behavior, seam allowances and assembly sequences during sampling and pilot runs.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workstation, manage inventory of consumables (thread, needles, adhesives, fasteners) and request replenishment proactively to avoid downtime.
  • Implement and follow company-specific standards for upholstery tolerances, fit and finish, including dimensional checks, appearance criteria and functional testing (e.g., cushion recovery, seam strength).
  • Respond to specialty tasks such as marine, automotive or contract upholstery jobs that require knowledge of specific materials, waterproofing techniques or regulatory standards.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by suggesting process, tooling or layout changes that reduce cycle time, reduce cost-per-unit or increase yield and quality.
  • Adhere to environmental, health and safety policies including proper disposal of scrap materials, safe storage of flammable adhesives and compliance with PPE, lockout/tagout and equipment guarding requirements.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in cycle time studies, kaizen events and production layout trials to support manufacturing efficiency and capacity planning.
  • Help coordinate small-batch or rush orders by prioritizing workflow, communicating status to production planners and reallocating resources when needed.
  • Provide hands-on support to the maintenance team during preventive maintenance and equipment setup, offering operator-level feedback on performance and needed adjustments.
  • Cross-train on related production roles such as cutting, foam fabrication and assembly to provide flexible coverage during peak periods or absences.
  • Prepare sample pieces and prototypes for sales, engineering and quality review, ensuring accurate labeling and documentation of materials and construction methods.
  • Maintain accurate records for traceability of special orders, warranty repairs and customer-specific finishes or modifications.
  • Participate in training sessions on new materials, adhesives, eco-friendly options and updated industry standards relevant to upholstery production.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient operation of industrial sewing machines (walking foot, post-bed, cylinder-bed, overlock) with the ability to set tension, stitch length, and troubleshoot feed/puckering issues.
  • Skilled in fabric, leather and vinyl cutting using hand tools, clicker presses, band knives and CNC/automated cutting systems with strong material yield optimization.
  • Foam measuring and cutting competency: contour cutting, skiving, die-cutting and adhesive lamination to produce cushions with precise densities and dimensions.
  • Experience using pneumatic staplers, hog ring pliers, upholstery tacking tools, hot/cold glue guns and tufting equipment safely and accurately.
  • Pattern reading and making: transfer and modify patterns, add seam allowances, calculate material yields and create templates for repeatable production.
  • Knowledge of upholstery materials: woven and knit fabrics, leathers, synthetic alternatives, batting, foam types (memory, HR, HR rebond) and their performance characteristics.
  • Competent in performing quality inspections: dimensional checks, seam strength testing, appearance assessment and first-article verification against specifications.
  • Familiarity with shop math, tape measures, calipers and basic gauge tools for dimensional control and tolerance verification.
  • Basic machine maintenance skills: changing needles/blades, lubrication, basic troubleshooting and reporting for complex repairs.
  • Experience with order and production tracking systems or paper route cards; ability to log production counts, scrap and defect reasons accurately.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High school diploma or GED; equivalent combination of related work experience and on-the-job training acceptable.
