Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Lead site analysis and baseline studies for urban projects, synthesizing topography, hydrology, soils, tree inventories, utilities, mobility patterns and regulatory constraints into a coherent design brief and technical assumptions for design teams and stakeholders.
- Develop bold, concept-stage urban landscape design proposals (sketches, diagrams, precedent studies, massing and phasing strategies) that advance placemaking objectives, pedestrian experience, safety, accessibility and biodiversity while aligning with municipal urban design frameworks.
- Produce complete schematic through construction documentation sets (grading, planting, irrigation, lighting, hardscape details, specifications, schedules, sections, and typical details) using AutoCAD, Revit/BIM or equivalent CAD platforms to facilitate permits and contractor pricing.
- Create resilient green infrastructure designs (bioswales, rain gardens, permeable pavements, detention/infiltration systems, green roofs and tree trenches) integrated with stormwater management objectives, LID best practices and local permitting requirements.
- Prepare planting design and plant palettes that respond to climate, soils, maintenance budgets, phenology, and urban forestry policies; include plant schedules, sizes, specifications, and maintenance/establishment plans.
- Coordinate multi-disciplinary technical deliverables with civil engineers, structural engineers, lighting designers, irrigation specialists, arborists, utilities and transportation teams to ensure constructability, cost control and regulatory compliance.
- Produce detailed construction specifications, material boards, cost estimates and tender packages; evaluate bids, prepare recommendation memos and support contractor selection and contract negotiations.
- Conduct regular site visits, quality-control inspections and punch-list management during construction administration; issue RFI responses, review submittals and ensure built work matches design intent and contract documents.
- Lead stakeholder engagement and public consultation processes: prepare visualizations, clear public presentation materials, workshop facilitation, collect feedback and synthesize input into revised design solutions and decision records.
- Develop high-quality visual communications: diagrams, plan graphics, 3D massing and photorealistic renderings (SketchUp, Rhino, Lumion, V-Ray) and illustrative perspectives to communicate design intent to clients, communities and permitting authorities.
- Manage multiple project scopes, budgets and schedules; serve as project manager for small to medium projects, administering contracts, monitoring project financials and ensuring timely delivery against milestones.
- Apply urban design standards, municipal codes, ADA accessibility requirements, streetscape guidelines and zoning provisions to design and documentation; prepare code compliance narratives and permit applications.
- Integrate urban heat island mitigation strategies (shade trees, high-albedo surfaces, strategic planting, water features) and climate-adaptive measures into master plans and site designs to enhance thermal comfort and resilience.
- Develop tree protection, pruning and preservation plans; coordinate with arborists and tree officers on retention strategies, removals, mitigation planting and permit documentation.
- Perform GIS-based mapping and spatial analysis (ArcGIS / QGIS) for demographic context, land use, catchment areas, site suitability, viewsheds and connectivity analysis to inform master planning decisions.
- Lead post-occupancy evaluation and performance monitoring for public realm projects; gather feedback, assess maintenance outcomes and propose corrective adjustments to achieve intended ecological and social outcomes.
- Prepare grant applications, municipal funding proposals, and feasibility reports for public realm and green infrastructure projects; provide supporting drawings, budgets and technical justification.
- Advise on lifecycle costs, maintenance regimes and operations manuals for landscape assets; prepare asset registers, maintenance schedules and guidance for municipal maintenance teams or private owners.
- Mentor junior staff and interns on technical documentation standards, planting design conventions, construction detailing and client-facing communication to build team capability.
- Stay current with professional registration requirements, local regulations, construction standards, and best practices in sustainable urban landscape design (e.g., LEED, SITES, Green Infrastructure).
- Advocate for inclusive public realm design: integrate universal design principles, consider CPTED (crime prevention through environmental design) and design for equitable access across user groups and mobility modes.
- Prepare compelling narrative design reports and executive summaries that clearly tie design solutions to policy goals, funding criteria, and measurable performance targets.
Secondary Functions
- Support business development initiatives: prepare qualifications, proposals, scope and fee estimates, and tailored pitch materials for public agency and private sector clients.
- Maintain and curate a portfolio of representative work, case studies and visual assets for marketing, recruitment and client presentations.
- Participate in community and stakeholder events outside of project scope to build relationships, gather local knowledge and represent the firm’s design approach.
- Contribute to internal practice development: standardize template libraries, CAD/BIM details, planting palettes and specification master files to improve delivery consistency.
- Provide specialist input to policy development, urban design guidelines and municipal review panels when requested.
- Support workplace health and safety planning for site activities and client-facing workshops.
