Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead the full lifecycle of urban research projects, from research design and methodology selection through data collection, analysis, interpretation, and final reporting, ensuring projects meet stated objectives, timelines, and quality standards.
  • Design and implement mixed-methods research strategies (qualitative interviews, focus groups, household and business surveys, key informant interviews, and ethnographic observation) tailored to urban planning, housing, mobility, or climate resilience studies.
  • Manage spatial data workflows and perform advanced GIS mapping and spatial analysis (ArcGIS, QGIS) to identify patterns, hotspots, and spatial correlations that inform planning recommendations and policy options.
  • Conduct rigorous quantitative analysis using statistical software (R, Stata, Python/pandas) to produce reproducible models, regression analyses, time-series analyses, and demographic projections for urban systems.
  • Clean, integrate, and transform multiple data sources (administrative data, parcel/tax records, census/ACS, transportation sensor data, land use databases) to produce high-quality, analysis-ready datasets.
  • Develop and administer survey instruments and sampling plans, manage fieldwork logistics, oversee enumerators, and ensure data quality protocols are applied consistently during data collection.
  • Synthesize qualitative findings through coding, thematic analysis, and narrative development, producing evidence-based insights for program and policy decisions.
  • Draft clear, policy-oriented research briefs, technical reports, peer-reviewed manuscripts, presentations, and executive summaries tailored to policymakers, funders, academic audiences, and community stakeholders.
  • Coordinate partnerships and relationships with municipal agencies, community-based organizations, academic partners, funding bodies, and private sector stakeholders to advance project objectives and ensure ethical community engagement.

  • Prepare and manage project budgets, monitor expenditures, track deliverables against milestones, and ensure compliance with funder and institutional policies.
  • Write and support grant proposals, scopes of work, and funding applications by articulating research questions, methodologies, expected outcomes, and budgets to secure external support.
  • Supervise, mentor, and coordinate research assistants, interns, and contracted consultants, providing clear task assignments, training on methods and tools, and quality control of their outputs.
  • Translate complex data and research findings into compelling data visualizations, interactive dashboards, maps, and infographics using tools such as Tableau, Power BI, and web mapping libraries for broader dissemination and impact.
  • Ensure research ethics and data privacy best practices are followed, including informed consent protocols, anonymization of sensitive datasets, and secure data storage procedures.
  • Monitor and evaluate project outcomes by developing indicators, KPIs, and monitoring frameworks to track program performance and inform iterative improvements.
  • Facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration between urban designers, planners, economists, climate scientists, transportation analysts, and community partners to integrate diverse expertise into cohesive research outputs.
  • Present research findings at public meetings, municipal briefings, academic conferences, and stakeholder forums; respond to questions and tailor communications for different audiences.
  • Identify and apply relevant policy frameworks, regulatory contexts, and best-practice case studies to ensure research recommendations are actionable and aligned with local governance structures.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of academic literature, data sources, open data initiatives, methodological innovations (e.g., remote sensing, machine learning for urban data), and emerging trends relevant to urban research.
  • Establish data governance practices and metadata standards to improve data discoverability, reproducibility, and long-term project value.
  • Coordinate procurement and contracting for field services, data licenses, and technical vendors; negotiate scope, timelines, and deliverables to ensure value for money.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
