The Usability Consultant partners with product, design, engineering, and business stakeholders to plan and execute user research and usability testing programs that uncover actionable insights. You will translate qualitative and quantitative user data into prioritized product improvements, create UX metrics and benchmarks, and help embed user-centered design practices across product teams. This role requires strong facilitation skills, experience with moderated and unmoderated usability testing, fluency in accessibility standards, and the ability to influence product decisions with clear, evidence-backed recommendations.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead end-to-end usability research programs for digital products, including defining research goals, recruiting representative users, designing test protocols, moderating sessions (remote and in-person), and synthesizing findings into actionable design recommendations.
  • Design and execute moderated and unmoderated usability tests, task analyses, A/B or split tests, and benchmark studies to measure task success, time-on-task, error rates, and other key usability metrics.
  • Conduct heuristic evaluations and cognitive walkthroughs using established usability principles and custom heuristics aligned to product goals to identify high-impact usability issues.
  • Translate complex qualitative insights and quantitative analytics into clear story-driven deliverables—user journey maps, personas, usability reports, and prioritized issue backlogs—that product teams can act on.
  • Partner with product managers and engineering leads to scope research timelines, align testing outcomes with product KPIs, and ensure usability recommendations are measurable and implementable.
  • Create and maintain usability test plans, participant screening criteria, consent documentation, and detailed test scripts that ensure reliable, reproducible research results.
  • Develop and track UX success metrics and dashboards (e.g., SUS, NPS, task completion, time on task) and report on usability trends to stakeholders and executives for data-informed decision making.
  • Advocate for accessibility and inclusive design by performing WCAG audits, accessibility testing with assistive technologies, and recommending prioritized remediation strategies.
  • Prototype testable concepts using low- and high-fidelity wireframes and interactive prototypes (e.g., Figma, Axure, InVision) to validate design hypotheses before development.
  • Conduct contextual inquiry and field studies to observe users in real-world settings, uncover latent needs, and validate assumptions about user workflows and environments.
  • Facilitate cross-functional workshops such as design sprints, usability debriefs, and co-creation sessions to align teams on user needs and accelerate consensus on product direction.
  • Synthesize research across multiple product areas to identify systemic usability issues, reuse patterns, and opportunities for design system improvements that increase consistency and usability.
  • Run moderated usability testing sessions with diverse participant pools, ensuring cultural, demographic, and accessibility considerations are reflected in sample selection.
  • Integrate behavioral analytics (e.g., Google Analytics, Mixpanel, Amplitude) and qualitative feedback (surveys, session replay) to triangulate findings and prioritize interventions based on user impact and business value.
  • Create onboarding materials, playbooks, and training for product teams on best practices for usability testing, guerrilla research, and remote research tools to build internal research capacity.
  • Manage external research vendors and participant recruitment partners when needed, ensuring quality screening, adherence to research protocols, and efficient budget use.
  • Provide detailed, prioritized recommendations with estimated effort and potential impact to help product teams scope usability fixes and roadmap improvements.
  • Conduct longitudinal usability studies and post-release validation to measure the effectiveness of design changes and inform iterative improvements.
  • Present research findings to diverse audiences, including executives, using compelling storytelling, data visualizations, and clear recommendations to drive timely product decisions.
  • Ensure all research activities comply with privacy, consent, and data protection policies, and maintain secure handling of sensitive participant information.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc product and stakeholder requests by designing quick-turn user tests and quick synthesis to unblock design or engineering decisions.
  • Build and maintain a repository of usability findings, participant recordings, and pattern libraries to accelerate future research and design work.
  • Mentor junior UX researchers, designers, and interns on research methods, facilitation, and synthesis techniques.
  • Contribute to product strategy by advising on user needs, competitive usability benchmarking, and market trends that affect product adoption and satisfaction.
  • Help define and evolve a company-wide UX research framework and standard operating procedures to ensure consistent, high-quality research across teams.
  • Coordinate with customer support and success teams to analyze qualitative support data and surface recurring usability issues that require product fixes.
  • Run stakeholder workshops to translate high-level business objectives into testable research questions and measurable success criteria.
  • Prepare executive summaries and board-level briefs that distill complex research into prioritized recommendations tied to business outcomes.
  • Maintain relationships with academic partners or professional organizations to stay current on usability research methods and recruit specialized participants when necessary.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Usability testing design and facilitation (moderated, unmoderated, remote and in-person) with demonstrated experience running end-to-end studies.
  • User research methods including contextual inquiry, ethnography, interview protocols, diary studies, and participatory design.
  • Heuristic evaluation, cognitive walkthroughs, and usability auditing aligned to Nielsen Norman Group heuristics or equivalent frameworks.
  • Accessibility testing and knowledge of WCAG 2.1 guidelines, screen reader testing (NVDA, VoiceOver), and remediation prioritization.
  • Prototyping and interaction design skills using Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, Axure, or similar tools to create testable artifacts.

  • Information architecture and interaction design principles to recommend navigational and structural improvements.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Psychology, Cognitive Science, Industrial/Interaction Design, Information Science, or a related field.

Preferred Education:

  • Master’s degree in HCI, Human Factors, Cognitive Psychology, Design Research, or equivalent professional training/certifications.
