As a Usability Engineer you will design and execute rigorous usability research and testing programs that directly inform product decisions and improve task success, efficiency, and satisfaction for customers. You will own test planning, participant recruitment, moderation (remote and in-person), analysis, and clear action-oriented reporting, working closely with Product Managers, UX Designers, Engineers, Accessibility specialists, and stakeholders to prioritize and deliver iterative UX improvements.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Plan, design, and execute comprehensive usability studies (moderated and unmoderated) that measure task success, time-on-task, error rates, and user satisfaction; translate results into prioritized, actionable product recommendations that drive measurable UX improvements.
  • Develop detailed test plans, protocols, task scripts, and recruitment criteria for representative participants, ensuring unbiased, reproducible procedures and reliable data collection across multiple platforms (web, native mobile, responsive).
  • Conduct heuristic evaluations and cognitive walkthroughs against established usability principles and the organization’s UX patterns, producing documented issues with severity ratings and recommended fixes.
  • Create and iterate low- and high-fidelity prototypes (wireframes, clickable prototypes) to validate interaction patterns and design hypotheses before engineering implementation, using tools such as Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, or Axure.
  • Design and implement mixed-methods research approaches that combine qualitative insights (interviews, contextual inquiry) with quantitative measures (task metrics, SUS, NPS, funnel analysis) to build a holistic evidence base for decisions.
  • Recruit, screen, and onboard diverse study participants (screening scripts, consent forms) to ensure test populations reflect real-world user segments and accessibility needs; manage participant incentives and scheduling logistics.
  • Moderate remote and in-person usability sessions, applying effective facilitation and probing techniques to elicit deep behavioral insights while minimizing moderator bias.
  • Run unmoderated and remote testing campaigns using platforms such as UserTesting, Lookback, PlaybookUX, or Optimal Workshop; set up tasks, monitor data quality, and validate scripts for reliable remote results.
  • Analyze usability session recordings, survey responses, and clickstream logs to extract patterns, themes, and statistically meaningful changes; produce synthesis artifacts such as affinity maps, journey maps, and personas.
  • Measure and report on UX KPIs (task completion, error frequency, abandonment rates, time to task, SUS scores) and track the impact of implemented changes through before/after studies and A/B testing where applicable.
  • Collaborate closely with product and engineering teams to translate usability findings into technical requirements, acceptance criteria, and prioritized backlog items while advocating for the user perspective in planning and grooming sessions.
  • Partner with accessibility and compliance teams to assess products against WCAG standards, conduct accessibility usability testing (screen reader, keyboard-only flows) and produce remediation guidance for inclusive design.
  • Produce clear, persuasive deliverables—test reports, executive summaries, slide decks, and recorded highlights—that synthesize findings into business-focused recommendations and ROI-oriented roadmaps.
  • Establish and maintain test libraries, participant panels, reusable scripts, templates, and instrumentation to scale usability practice across multiple product teams and reduce time-to-insight.
  • Mentor and coach designers, product managers, and junior researchers on usability methods, test design, and interpretation of evidence to build organization-wide research literacy.
  • Integrate behavioral analytics (Google Analytics, Mixpanel, Amplitude) and user telemetry with qualitative findings to triangulate root causes of friction and prioritize intervention opportunities.
  • Partner with data science and A/B testing teams to design controlled experiments that validate design hypotheses, define success metrics, and ensure statistical rigor in evaluating product changes.
  • Lead cross-functional UX workshops and design sprints that use usability findings to co-create solutions, align on success metrics, and accelerate decision-making.
  • Advocate for usability standards and best practices across the product lifecycle, influencing product roadmaps and design system components to reduce future usability debt.
  • Monitor and report on competitor usability practices and industry benchmarks to identify market opportunities and continuously raise the bar on UX quality.
  • Implement scalable remote research workflows and privacy-conscious data handling practices to ensure participant confidentiality and compliance with data protection policies.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc stakeholder questions with rapid exploratory usability checks and guerrilla testing to inform urgent product decisions.
  • Maintain and improve the organization’s usability testing repository, playbooks, and templates to standardize methods and speed up execution.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Cognitive Science, Psychology, Industrial Design, Informatics, Computer Science, or related field.

  • Master’s degree in HCI, Human Factors, Cognitive Psychology, or a related discipline; professional certifications in UX research or accessibility are a plus.
