Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop comprehensive usability research plans and test protocols that align with product roadmaps, business objectives, and measurable success criteria (e.g., task completion rate, time-on-task, System Usability Scale).
  • Design and manage end-to-end usability studies — including lab, remote moderated, unmoderated, and guerrilla testing — to validate interaction patterns, prototypes, and production features.

  • Facilitate moderated sessions (remote and in-person), applying neutral probing, think-aloud techniques, and bias-minimizing moderation to capture rich qualitative data.
  • Conduct heuristic evaluations and cognitive walkthroughs against established usability heuristics, accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1+), and platform conventions to quickly identify high-impact usability issues.
  • Prototype test artifacts at appropriate fidelity (paper, clickable, interactive) using common tools to reduce ambiguity and accelerate design-validation cycles.
  • Synthesize qualitative insights and quantitative metrics into prioritized recommendations with clear rationale, severity ratings, and implementation guidance for product and engineering teams.
  • Partner with product analytics and data science to define telemetry, event tracking, and A/B test instrumentation that validates usability hypotheses with behavioral data.
  • Translate research outputs into actionable artefacts (personas, journey maps, usability reports, issue trackers, and design guidelines) that guide designers and engineers in practical implementation.
  • Build and maintain a living repository of usability findings, testing templates, recruitment scripts, and reusable tasks to scale testing cadence and institutional knowledge.
  • Coach product teams on best practices for usability testing, inclusive design, and interpreting test results to improve adoption of research-informed decision-making.
  • Prioritize usability fixes by impact and effort, collaborating with product owners to sequence remediation work in product backlogs and sprint plans.
  • Run cross-functional design sprints and usability workshops that accelerate consensus, uncover hidden assumptions, and foster co-created solutions grounded in user evidence.
  • Develop and maintain remote usability testing capability and vendor relationships, including managing budgets, SLAs, and quality control for third-party platforms (UserTesting, Optimal Workshop, Lookback, etc.).
  • Measure and report on usability KPIs and program health (e.g., test coverage by feature, average time from insight to action, reduction in critical usability defects) to demonstrate ROI of usability activities.
  • Advocate for accessibility-first approaches and inclusive research practices, coordinating with accessibility engineers and legal/compliance as needed.
  • Support iterative design cycles by running quick validation tests (rapid prototype checks, hallway testing) and longer-form evaluative studies for major releases and redesigns.
  • Ensure ethical research practices and data privacy compliance in participant handling, consent collection, and data storage, adhering to company policies and regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA).
  • Create clear, SEO- and stakeholder-friendly executive summaries, slide decks, and technical appendices to communicate research findings to leadership and cross-functional partners.
  • Collaborate with UX writing and content strategy to identify language-driven usability problems and validate content prototypes in usability contexts.
  • Establish and refine success metrics for usability initiatives, driving continuous improvement through iteration and learning loops.
  • Coordinate with customer support and frontline teams to capture real-world usability issues, inform test scenarios, and close the loop on customer-reported problems.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Psychology, Human Factors, Interaction Design, Information Science, Anthropology, Computer Science, or a related field.

Preferred Education:

  • Master’s degree in HCI, Human Factors, Cognitive Psychology, Design Research, or related disciplines; or equivalent professional certification in UX research/usability.
