Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead the conception, planning, and execution of end-to-end usability studies (moderated and unmoderated, remote and in‑lab) to evaluate new features, flows, and product hypotheses and deliver clear, prioritized recommendations that inform product roadmaps.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop a team of usability analysts and junior researchers — assign projects, review study plans and deliverables, conduct performance feedback, and promote professional growth and methodological consistency.
  • Design robust mixed-method research programs that integrate qualitative usability testing with quantitative metrics (task completion, time-on-task, SUS, NPS) to measure usability improvements and business impact.
  • Establish and maintain usability lab operations, including scheduling, participant recruitment pipelines, device inventories, recording systems, and facility processes to ensure reliable, high-quality data capture.
  • Manage participant recruitment and screening strategies — develop screener criteria, manage vendor relationships or in-house panels, ensure representative sampling, and oversee incentivization and logistics.
  • Facilitate moderated usability sessions and train other moderators on best practices for neutral moderation, probe development, and minimizing bias during sessions.
  • Create test protocols, task scenarios, consent forms, and discussion guides that align with research objectives and ethical standards; ensure all materials are clear, repeatable, and scalable.
  • Lead heuristic evaluations and cognitive walkthroughs to rapidly identify major usability issues and to prioritize remediation work with product and design teams.
  • Synthesize findings into compelling artifacts — written reports, executive briefs, journey maps, task analyses, annotated recordings, and slide decks — that communicate insight, severity, and recommended fixes to stakeholders.
  • Collaborate closely with product managers, UX designers, and engineers to translate usability findings into actionable requirements and design iterations; participate in design reviews and sprint planning.
  • Define, monitor, and report on usability KPIs and dashboards that track improvements over time (e.g., task success rate, error rate, completion time, conversion lift) and link research outcomes to business metrics.
  • Ensure products meet accessibility guidelines and inclusive design standards (WCAG 2.1/3.0) by integrating accessibility checks and assistive technology testing into usability workflows.
  • Manage budgets and vendor contracts for participant recruitment services, lab equipment, and research tools; evaluate and select tools (e.g., UserTesting, Lookback, Hotjar, Morae, optimal workshop) to scale research operations.
  • Run rapid iterative usability tests and prototype validation cycles to de-risk design decisions early in the development process and accelerate time-to-market while maintaining research rigor.
  • Implement and maintain a centralized research repository (insights library) and tagging taxonomy to surface prior learnings, ensure reuse of findings, and prevent duplicate efforts.
  • Lead cross-functional workshops and synthesis sessions (affinity mapping, design sprints, insight prioritization) to align stakeholders on user problems and recommended next steps.
  • Ensure compliance with data privacy, consent, and institutional policies (GDPR, CCPA) when collecting, storing, and reporting participant data.
  • Drive continuous improvement of usability methodologies by evaluating new research techniques (eye-tracking, biometrics, remote session analytics), piloting innovations, and establishing standard operating procedures.
  • Present research outcomes and roadmap impact to senior leadership and product teams, advocating for user-centered changes and demonstrating ROI from usability investments.
  • Troubleshoot and QA usability deliverables — validate transcripts, coding, tagging, and statistical analyses to ensure high-quality, defensible conclusions.
  • Build and maintain relationships with external academic partners or specialized vendors for advanced research needs (eye-tracking studies, large-scale surveys, longitudinal studies).
  • Coordinate cross-regional research efforts, ensuring consistency in methodology and cultural adaptation of study materials when conducting global usability research.
  • Champion user empathy across the organization by organizing regular show-and-tell sessions, sharing video highlights, and embedding user narratives into product decision-making.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proven expertise designing and conducting usability tests (moderated, unmoderated, remote, in‑lab) and synthesizing qualitative and quantitative findings into actionable product recommendations.
  • Strong knowledge of UX research methods: task analysis, contextual inquiry, heuristic evaluation, cognitive walkthroughs, card sorting, tree testing, and survey design.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Psychology, Human Factors, Industrial Design, Cognitive Science, Interaction Design, or a related field.

Preferred Education:
Master’s degree in HCI, Human Factors, UX Research, Cognitive Psychology, or related discipline.
