Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Plan, schedule and coordinate usability and accessibility studies (moderated and unmoderated), including participant recruitment criteria, session scripts, consent procedures, and test logistics to ensure timely, reproducible results.
  • Design and set up usability test environments — lab rooms, remote testing software, recording equipment, mobile device farms and assistive-technology configurations (screen readers, switch controls) to meet study requirements and WCAG testing needs.
  • Operate and maintain usability lab hardware and software: cameras, microphones, screen capture, Morae/Lookback/UserTesting/Optimal Workshop or equivalent, ensuring recordings are high-quality and securely stored following privacy policies.
  • Create and validate test prototypes and experimental stimuli with product and design teams, ensuring test builds reflect realistic user flows and instrumentation captures necessary telemetry and metrics.
  • Conduct moderated usability sessions, following scripts and probes, using neutral facilitation techniques to reduce observer bias and collect qualitative insights consistently across participants.
  • Run unmoderated remote tests and A/B experiments, configure task flows and success metrics, monitor sessions in real time, and triage technical issues to maximize response rates and data quality.
  • Perform accessibility tests using assistive technologies (JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver), keyboard-only navigation, and automated scanners, and document WCAG conformance findings with reproducible steps and screen recordings.
  • Execute heuristic evaluations and usability audits against established heuristics and internal UX patterns, producing prioritized defect lists for product and engineering teams.
  • Capture, tag and transcribe session recordings, annotate video highlights, and maintain an organized repository of raw data, clips, consent forms, and metadata to support analysis and cross-study synthesis.
  • Produce standardized usability test reports with clear executive summaries, task success rates, time-on-task metrics, error rates, quotes, prioritized recommendations, and suggested fixes mapped to user stories.
  • Collaborate with UX researchers and data analysts to quantify usability metrics, design benchmarks and KPIs, and contribute to dashboards and scorecards that track experience improvements over time.
  • Build and maintain participant panels and recruitment pipelines, handling screening, scheduling, incentives, and communications while ensuring a diverse and representative sample per study requirements.
  • Troubleshoot participant technical problems during remote sessions, escalate persistent issues to IT or engineering, and document common friction points to inform tooling improvements.
  • Implement test instrumentation and basic scripting for data collection (event logging, custom analytics tags) in partnership with analytics and engineering teams to enable richer post-test analysis.
  • Enforce ethics, consent and privacy best practices during recruitment, data collection, and storage — maintaining compliance with GDPR, CCPA and internal privacy policies.
  • Train and support new facilitators, product teams and stakeholders on testing protocols, lab procedures, and how to interpret usability metrics, ensuring consistent test quality across the organization.
  • Maintain and update usability lab documentation, runbooks and checklists for test setup, emergency procedures, and equipment maintenance to reduce setup time and avoid data loss.
  • Coordinate with product, design and engineering to ensure usability findings are translated into actionable backlog items, including writing clear bug reports, acceptance criteria and reproduction steps.
  • Participate in iterative product discovery sessions and design critiques to provide operational perspective on testability, recruitment feasibility and likely user pain points.
  • Monitor and optimize remote testing tools and panels for cost, reliability and participant experience; evaluate new tools and pilot improvements to the testing stack.
  • Facilitate cross-functional usability showcases and stakeholder briefings, demonstrating findings through annotated clips and interactive artifacts to drive adoption of usability recommendations.
  • Assist with longitudinal studies and diary studies, collecting and organizing participant submissions, and ensuring timelines and incentives are managed correctly.

Secondary Functions

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Associate degree or equivalent practical experience; many employers accept hands-on experience in lieu of formal credentials.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Psychology, Cognitive Science, Human Factors, Information Design, Computer Science, or related field.
