Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Construct, install and maintain overhead distribution and transmission lines, including pole setting, crossarm and insulator installation, and conductor stringing in accordance with company standards and NESC codes.
- Perform live-line and de-energized line work safely by applying hot-stick techniques, rubber-glove procedures, and proper personal protective equipment (PPE) to avoid electrical hazards.
- Operate aerial devices (bucket trucks), digger derricks, cranes, backhoes, and other heavy equipment to set poles, lift transformers and reposition conductors while adhering to equipment manufacturer and safety protocols.
- Climb poles using hooks, gaffs, and ladders to perform splicing, anchoring, and termination of conductors and hardware at varied heights under strict safety procedures.
- Splice, terminate, and test overhead and underground conductors, fiber and communication cables using proper splice kits, connectors, and test instruments to ensure reliable electrical continuity and insulation integrity.
- Install, diagnose and replace distribution transformers, cutouts, fuse assemblies, switchgear and associated ground systems; perform grounding and bonding testing per standard practice.
- Troubleshoot distribution system faults using visual inspections, fault indicators, megger insulation resistance testing, time-domain reflectometry (TDR) and other diagnostic tools to isolate and resolve outages.
- Respond to emergency outage situations 24/7, perform storm restoration work, and coordinate with dispatch and emergency response teams to restore power safely and efficiently.
- Dig, backfill and trench for underground installations and perform location marking, conduit installation, joint closure connections and manhole work ensuring compliance with locates and utility clearance requirements.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, electrical schematics, single-line diagrams and construction plans to execute work packages accurately and maintain as-built records.
- Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance on line hardware, poles, crossarms, insulators, and guying systems; schedule replacements and escalations for deteriorated infrastructure.
- Install and maintain distribution automation devices, sectionalizers, reclosers, and remote monitoring devices; assist with commissioning and verification to enhance system reliability.
- Safely rig and hoist transformers, equipment and materials using proper slings, tag lines and rigging calculations; ensure load security and environmental protections during lifts.
- Complete accurate job documentation including work orders, outage reports, safety checklists, equipment inspection logs, and material reconciliation using mobile devices or company software.
- Mentor and train apprentices and ground personnel in safe climbing techniques, line construction practices, tool usage, and company policies to build crew competency and succession.
- Participate in pre-job hazard analysis and tailboard safety meetings, identifying hazards, setting controls and confirming emergency rescue plans before starting elevated or energized work.
- Follow permit-to-work, lockout/tagout, and confined space procedures when interacting with substations, vaults or energized equipment to prevent incidents and comply with regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate with traffic control teams, private landowners and municipal agencies during construction and restoration activities to minimize public impact and obtain required access or permits.
- Maintain and inspect tools, hot sticks, gloves, sleeves and protective gear; keep testing equipment calibrated and report deficiencies or required repairs promptly.
- Apply vegetation management and right-of-way clearing best practices to maintain required clearances around lines, reducing tree contact and outage risk.
- Adhere to environmental and utility-specific regulations for spill prevention, containment, and waste disposal when handling oil-filled equipment, batteries, or contaminated materials.
- Assist with outage communication and customer interactions, providing timely and courteous updates to supervisors and affected customers about restoration status and safety considerations.
Secondary Functions
- Support inventory control by reporting material usage, requesting replenishment for poles, conductors, and small tools, and participating in periodic stock audits.
- Participate in safety program improvement initiatives, report near-misses, and help implement corrective actions to reduce future incidents.
- Contribute to work-order planning by providing field input on job durations, equipment needs, and logistical constraints.
- Assist technical staff with system upgrades, meter changes, and connection commissioning during planned service modifications.
- Provide on-call availability as required, ensuring responsive communication and timely crew mobilization for emergency callouts.
- Help maintain crew vehicle and equipment cleanliness, fueling, and routine maintenance checks to ensure reliability and regulatory compliance.

Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Proficient pole climbing and rescue techniques; experienced with gaffs, hooks, ladders and pole-top work.
- Certified operator of aerial bucket trucks, digger derricks and other line construction equipment; comfortable with rigging and hoisting operations.
- Skilled in conductor splicing and termination for aluminum and copper, including overhead splice kits and underground termination methods.
- Knowledgeable in overhead and underground fault diagnosis using clamp meters, insulation testers (megger), time domain reflectometer (TDR) and fault locators.

- Experience using mobile work-order systems, GIS mapping tools, and electronic documentation to record asset conditions and job completion.
- Valid commercial driverβs license (CDL) preferred or required in many roles; experience driving crew trucks and towing trailers.
- EV and renewable distribution integration knowledge is a plus for modernized grid projects.

Educational Background
Minimum Education:
- High school diploma or GED required.
Preferred Education:
