Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Performs skilled diagnosis and troubleshooting of malfunctions in water mains, sewer lines, storm drains, and related utility infrastructure to identify root causes of failures.
  • Conducts emergency and scheduled repairs on pressurized water pipes, gravity sewer lines, and force mains, including repairing breaks, fixing leaks, and replacing damaged sections.
  • Operates a variety of heavy and light construction equipment, such as backhoes, excavators, dump trucks, and trenchers, for excavation, backfilling, and site restoration.
  • Installs new water and sewer service lines, including tapping mains, setting meters, and connecting to residential or commercial properties, ensuring all connections meet code.
  • Utilizes specialized diagnostic equipment, including line locators, leak detectors, and sewer inspection cameras (CCTV), to accurately assess system conditions and pinpoint issues.
  • Executes preventative maintenance programs by systematically flushing water lines, cleaning sewer mains, and exercising system valves to ensure long-term reliability.
  • Responds to after-hours emergency calls to address urgent situations like major water main breaks or sewer backups, often working in adverse weather and hazardous conditions.
  • Adheres strictly to all safety protocols and regulations, including trenching and shoring safety (OSHA standards), confined space entry procedures, and traffic control setup.
  • Performs welding, soldering, and pipe-fitting tasks to join and repair various types of pipes, including ductile iron, PVC, copper, and steel.
  • Replaces and repairs fire hydrants, valves, and other system appurtenances to maintain proper function and accessibility for emergency services.
  • Conducts pressure and flow tests on newly installed or repaired water lines to verify system integrity and ensure compliance with engineering specifications.
  • Collects water samples from various points in the distribution system for bacteriological and chemical analysis as required by regulatory agencies.
  • Interacts professionally with homeowners, business owners, and the general public to communicate the nature of the work, expected duration, and any service interruptions.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, system maps, and engineering drawings to understand utility layouts and execute work accurately.
  • Performs site restoration following repairs, including backfilling trenches, compacting soil, and repairing asphalt, concrete, or landscaping to pre-existing conditions.
  • Installs and maintains cathodic protection systems to prevent corrosion on metallic pipelines, extending the lifespan of critical infrastructure.
  • Assists in the investigation of customer complaints regarding low water pressure, water quality issues, or sewer service problems, providing on-site diagnosis and resolution.
  • Operates hydro-excavation equipment for non-destructive digging around sensitive underground utilities to prevent accidental damage.
  • Participates in cross-training to gain proficiency in the maintenance and repair of different utility systems (e.g., water, wastewater, gas).
  • Manages the proper handling and disposal of materials excavated or removed from job sites in accordance with environmental regulations.
