Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Define and own the multi-year UX research strategy and roadmap that aligns with company objectives, product strategy, and customer experience goals; prioritize research initiatives to maximize product impact and ROI.
- Build, lead and scale a cross-functional UX research team — recruiting, hiring, onboarding, mentoring, and developing researchers at multiple seniority levels to create depth and breadth across qualitative and quantitative capabilities.
- Design and implement a best-in-class ResearchOps practice: participant recruitment and panels, tooling and vendor management, repositories for research artifacts, ethical and legal compliance, scheduling and budgeting.
- Lead large-scale mixed-methods research programs including ethnography, diary studies, longitudinal research, usability testing, remote moderated and unmoderated testing, surveys, and quantitative analysis to answer complex product questions.
- Partner with Product, Design, Engineering, Data Science, and Marketing to embed research early into the product lifecycle and to translate user insights into clear product recommendations, user stories, and roadmap decisions.
- Establish research standards, playbooks, templates, and quality criteria (study design, moderation guides, analysis approaches) to ensure consistency, rigor, and reproducibility across studies.
- Drive strategic executive-level storytelling and communication: synthesize research findings into concise, actionable insights with clear business implications and present recommendations to senior leadership and stakeholders.
- Define and track impact metrics for research initiatives (adoption, conversion, retention, NPS, SUS, task success, time-on-task); attribute research influence on product KPIs and iterate strategy based on outcomes.
- Create and manage annual budgets for research programs, tools, participant incentives, and vendor relationships while optimizing for impact and operational efficiency.
- Advocate for customer-centered decision-making across the organization by running workshops, design sprints, insight-sharing sessions, and stakeholder alignment meetings.
- Oversee complex user recruitment programs, inclusive sampling strategies, and diversity initiatives to ensure research reflects target audiences and mitigates bias.
- Lead cross-functional discovery initiatives for new product areas, supporting product-market fit hypothesis testing, opportunity sizing, and go/no-go decisions with evidence.
- Drive continuous improvement in research analysis and synthesis—develop frameworks for coalescing qualitative themes and quantitative signals into prioritized recommendations and design principles.
- Maintain relationships with external research vendors/agencies and academic partners where appropriate to augment capabilities and deliver specialized studies at scale.
- Mentor and develop senior researchers in advanced methodologies, statistical thinking, and leadership so the team can autonomously deliver high-quality studies.
- Standardize and oversee documentation, knowledge management, and a centralized insights repository to reduce duplicate work and accelerate organizational learning.
- Ensure research processes meet privacy, accessibility, and ethical standards (consent procedures, data handling, inclusive design considerations).
- Partner with Data Science and Analytics to design experiments (A/B tests) and integrate quantitative telemetry with qualitative insights to create holistic evidence.
- Anticipate and surface product and UX risks from user research, escalating appropriately and recommending mitigations that balance user needs and business constraints.
- Serve as a hiring and promotion decision-maker for the research org; define skill matrices and career growth plans for researchers and allied roles.
- Drive thought leadership externally and internally through presentations, whitepapers, conference talks, and internal learning programs that raise the profile of research and attract talent.
- Facilitate cross-team alignment on research priorities during product planning cycles and influence roadmaps by quantifying user needs and opportunity areas.
- Implement processes to measure and communicate research ROI to stakeholders, demonstrating how user research reduces risk, accelerates innovation, and improves customer satisfaction.
- Lead crisis/rapid-response research efforts during critical product incidents or unexpected user behavior to inform fast, evidence-based corrective action.
Secondary Functions
- Support ad-hoc research requests and rapid discovery sprints for high-priority product questions or incident responses.
- Coordinate cross-functional research planning with Product and Design leadership during quarterly and yearly roadmap planning.
- Oversee and approve participant incentive policies, vendor contracts, and research procurement decisions.
- Serve as an escalation point for complex recruitment or ethical dilemmas and ensure all studies meet internal compliance and privacy guidelines.
- Create and deliver training programs for non-research stakeholders on interpreting research outputs and conducting basic user testing.
- Maintain and optimize the research tools stack (remote testing platforms, survey tools, transcription, analysis tools) in partnership with ResearchOps.
- Curate and publish executive briefing notes and highlight reels to increase visibility of customer insights across the org.
- Partner with Marketing and Customer Success to surface Voice of the Customer themes that inform product communications and retention strategies.
- Represent the company at industry conferences, panels, and academic collaborations to attract research talent and share best practices.
- Contribute to cross-functional initiatives like accessibility programs, inclusive design efforts, and customer support escalations that benefit from user insights.
