  • Graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program
  • General Sonographer (RDMS) seeking to specialize in vascular imaging
  • Cardiovascular Technologist with on-the-job cross-training in vascular ultrasound

Advancement To:

  • Lead or Chief Vascular Sonographer
  • Technical Director of a Vascular Lab
  • Clinical Instructor or Program Director for a Sonography Program
  • Clinical Applications Specialist for an ultrasound equipment manufacturer

Lateral Moves:

  • Echocardiographer (RDCS) with additional certification
  • Clinical Research Sonographer in academic or industry settings
  • Medical Device or Pharmaceutical Sales Representative

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Independently perform a comprehensive range of non-invasive vascular ultrasound procedures, including but not limited to carotid duplex, peripheral arterial and venous duplex, visceral vascular, and transcranial Doppler studies.
  • Skillfully operate and maintain sophisticated ultrasound equipment, adjusting settings and transducers to optimize image quality and ensure diagnostic accuracy for each specific examination.
  • Prepare patients for procedures by thoroughly explaining the process, answering questions to alleviate anxiety, and ensuring their comfort and safety throughout the examination.
  • Obtain and review pertinent patient history and supporting clinical data from the electronic medical record (EMR) to correlate findings and direct the sonographic examination appropriately.
  • Analyze and interpret sonographic findings in real-time, demonstrating a deep understanding of vascular anatomy, physiology, and complex pathological conditions.
  • Generate concise, accurate, and detailed preliminary reports of technical findings for the interpreting physician, including representative images and measurements documented in the PACS/reporting system.
  • Exercise strong clinical judgment to identify and document critical findings, and communicate them immediately to the referring physician or radiologist according to established protocols.
  • Assist physicians with ultrasound-guided procedures such as biopsies, venous ablations, or catheter placements, ensuring a sterile field and proper technique.
  • Perform non-imaging physiologic vascular studies, including ankle-brachial indices (ABI), segmental pressures, and pulse volume recordings (PVR), to assess blood flow and arterial occlusion.
  • Evaluate the status of arterial bypass grafts, stents, and dialysis access fistulas/grafts, providing crucial data for patient management and intervention planning.
  • Adhere strictly to institutional policies, safety regulations, and infection control standards to maintain a safe environment for both patients and staff.
  • Participate in the quality assurance and quality improvement (QA/QI) program for the vascular lab, including performing peer reviews and assisting with data collection for accreditation.
  • Maintain departmental supply levels for the vascular lab, ensuring all necessary materials are available and equipment is in good working order by reporting any malfunctions.
  • Act as a clinical resource and mentor for sonography students, new employees, and other staff, providing guidance on scanning techniques and protocols.
  • Stay current with advancements in the field of vascular sonography by participating in continuing education activities to maintain active registry status (RVT/RVS).
  • Demonstrate flexibility by participating in on-call rotations for emergent and after-hours vascular studies as required by the department schedule.
  • Use the hospital's EMR and Radiology Information System (RIS) to manage patient orders, schedule procedures, and complete all necessary documentation and billing entries.
  • Perform specialized examinations such as vein mapping for potential bypass grafts or fistula creation and evaluate for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA).
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism and interpersonal skills when interacting with a diverse patient population, their families, and the multidisciplinary care team.
  • Assist in the maintenance of accreditation standards as set forth by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) for vascular testing.
