Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute comprehensive powertrain calibration on engine test benches, chassis dynamometers, and in-vehicle to meet stringent performance, fuel economy, and emissions targets.
  • Develop, refine, and release calibrations for core engine functions, including air charge, fuel delivery, injection timing, and torque management to optimize drivability.
  • Perform in-depth analysis of complex data sets gathered during testing, utilizing tools like MATLAB and ETAS INCA, to diagnose issues, validate changes, and optimize control strategies.
  • Calibrate and validate On-Board Diagnostics (OBD-II) systems to ensure robust fault detection and compliance with government regulations (CARB, EPA).
  • Plan, coordinate, and conduct extensive vehicle-level testing trips in extreme environmental conditions, such as hot weather, cold weather, and high altitude, to ensure system robustness.
  • Manage the flashing and updating of software and calibration files on Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and other vehicle controllers, ensuring version control and integrity.
  • Fine-tune vehicle drivability characteristics, including throttle response, tip-in/out behavior, and transmission shift quality, through subjective evaluation and objective data analysis.
  • Calibrate and validate Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) features like Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), and Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) for performance and safety.
  • Lead the root cause analysis and resolution of complex, system-level issues identified during development, validation, or post-production phases.
  • Interface directly with cross-functional teams, including software developers, hardware engineers, and systems architects, to define requirements and resolve integration challenges.
  • Develop and execute detailed calibration and validation test plans based on vehicle program milestones and technical requirements.
  • Author and maintain clear, detailed technical documentation, including calibration reports, release notes, and best practice guides for internal knowledge sharing.
  • Support vehicle certification and homologation activities by preparing documentation and providing technical expertise during interactions with regulatory agencies.
  • Calibrate and optimize the performance of hybrid (HEV/PHEV) and battery electric (BEV) vehicle systems, including battery thermal management, torque blending, and regenerative braking.
  • Perform competitive vehicle benchmarking through instrumentation and subjective assessment to inform calibration targets and strategies.
  • Optimize vehicle thermal management systems to ensure peak performance and longevity of the engine, battery, and power electronics under all operating conditions.

  • Support durability and reliability teams by providing specific calibration sets to stress components and analyzing system behavior during long-term testing.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of internal calibration tools, methodologies, and automated testing scripts to increase efficiency and accuracy.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep proficiency with industry-standard calibration tools such as ETAS INCA, Vector CANape, or dSPACE ControlDesk.
  • Strong working knowledge of automotive communication protocols, including CAN, LIN, and Automotive Ethernet, and experience using relevant analysis tools (e.g., CANalyzer).
  • Advanced data analysis capabilities using software like MATLAB/Simulink, Python, or AVL CONCERTO to interpret test results and model system behavior.
  • In-depth understanding of internal combustion engine (ICE), hybrid (HEV/PHEV), or battery electric vehicle (BEV) architectures and control systems.
  • Solid foundation in control systems theory and its practical application within embedded automotive software.
