Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive, multi-point inspections on a diverse range of vehicles to accurately determine their overall cosmetic, mechanical, and structural condition.
  • Utilize a handheld tablet and proprietary software to systematically capture vehicle data, including VIN, mileage, options, and trim level information.
  • Meticulously identify, document, and code all exterior and interior imperfections, including scratches, dents, rock chips, paint flaws, and collision damage.
  • Inspect and record the condition of interior components, such as upholstery tears, dashboard cracks, stains, odors, and the functionality of electronics.
  • Perform functional checks on all mechanical and electrical systems, including engine, transmission, brakes, steering, suspension, HVAC, lights, and infotainment systems.
  • Safely conduct short road tests in a designated area to evaluate engine performance, transmission shifting, steering alignment, and listen for any abnormal noises or vibrations.
  • Capture a full set of high-quality, standardized digital photographs of each vehicle, including specific angles and detailed close-ups of all identified damages.
  • Assess tire condition, measure tread depth using appropriate gauges, and verify that tire specifications match the vehicle and meet safety standards.
  • Verify the presence and condition of standard vehicle equipment, such as spare tires, jack/tool kits, owner's manuals, and all sets of key fobs.
  • Inspect the vehicle's undercarriage for evidence of fluid leaks, significant rust, exhaust system issues, or frame and structural damage.
  • Employ tools like a paint depth gauge to detect undisclosed bodywork, paint repairs, and the presence of body filler.
  • Generate precise, objective, and clear electronic vehicle condition reports (VCRs) that provide a reliable basis for repair estimates and sales listings.
  • Provide initial cost estimates for cosmetic and light mechanical repairs based on a standardized pricing matrix and parts/labor guide.
  • Communicate inspection findings effectively with team leads, reconditioning managers, and sales staff to ensure a smooth workflow.
  • Ensure all inspected vehicles are correctly labeled with stock numbers and condition grades before being moved to their next designated location.
  • Maintain a consistent pace to meet daily and weekly inspection quotas without ever compromising the quality and accuracy of your assessments.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety protocols and procedures, especially when operating vehicles and working within the inspection facility.
  • Stay current with the features, technology, and common issues of new vehicle models from various manufacturers.
  • Perform VIN verification against title and registration documents to identify any potential discrepancies.
  • Grade the overall condition of the vehicle using an established grading system (e.g., 1-5 scale) to help classify it for auction, wholesale, or retail channels.
  • Check for and report on any illuminated dashboard warning lights, using basic OBD-II scanners to retrieve diagnostic trouble codes when necessary.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in ad-hoc projects, such as analyzing common damage trends or evaluating inspection process efficiency.
  • Provide feedback to management and IT teams to help improve inspection software, reporting standards, and operational processes.
  • Collaborate with reconditioning, sales, and auction teams to ensure the data captured in condition reports directly meets their operational needs.
  • Participate in regular team meetings, continuous improvement workshops, and training sessions to maintain high standards and adapt to new procedures.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep knowledge of automotive mechanical systems (engine, transmission, brakes, suspension).
  • Strong understanding of vehicle body, frame, and unibody construction.
  • Proficiency in using handheld electronic devices (tablets, smartphones) and inspection software for data entry.
  • Ability to identify prior paintwork, body filler, and undisclosed collision repairs.
  • Experience operating tools such as paint depth meters, tire tread depth gauges, and basic OBD-II code readers.
  • Competency in driving vehicles with both automatic and manual transmissions.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate from a vocational or technical college in Automotive Technology.
  • ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications are a significant plus.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 1-3 years of hands-on experience in the automotive industry is required. This can include roles as an automotive technician, body shop technician, service writer, reconditioning specialist, or a similar inspection position.

Preferred:

  • 2+ years of direct experience as a Vehicle Inspector for a large dealership, rental car company, or automotive auction.
