Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform advanced diagnostics on complex electrical and electronic systems to accurately pinpoint malfunctions using scan tools, multimeters, oscilloscopes, and other specialized equipment.
  • Install, inspect, repair, and maintain a wide range of electrical components, including alternators, starters, batteries, ignition systems, and wiring harnesses.
  • Skillfully interpret and apply technical information from complex wiring diagrams, circuit schematics, and manufacturer service manuals to guide troubleshooting and repair processes.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve intricate issues within modern vehicle networks, including CAN bus, LIN bus, and other communication protocols that link various electronic control units (ECUs).
  • Install and configure a variety of aftermarket electronic systems, such as GPS and telematics units, security and alarm systems, audio/visual equipment, and emergency lighting.
  • Service and repair vehicle heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, focusing on the electrical and electronic control aspects to ensure proper climate function.
  • Conduct comprehensive electrical system inspections as part of preventative maintenance schedules to identify and rectify potential issues before they lead to vehicle downtime.
  • Repair or fabricate wiring harnesses and connectors, ensuring all connections are secure, protected from the elements, and meet or exceed OEM specifications.
  • Diagnose and rectify faults in advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), including sensors, cameras, and control modules, followed by precise calibration.
  • Address issues within lighting systems, including headlights, taillights, indicators, and interior lights, ensuring they are fully functional and compliant with road safety standards.
  • Work with high-voltage systems found in hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs), adhering to strict safety protocols for de-powering, servicing, and re-energizing the vehicle.
  • Flash, program, and update vehicle control modules (ECMs, PCMs, BCMs) with the latest manufacturer software to resolve performance issues or enable new features.
  • Execute battery management services, including state-of-health testing, charging, load testing, and replacement, ensuring optimal performance of the vehicle's power storage system.
  • Conduct final verification tests, including system function checks and road tests, to confirm that all electrical issues have been successfully resolved and the vehicle is safe for operation.
  • Meticulously document all diagnostic findings, work performed, parts utilized, and labor time in the company's maintenance management system for accurate record-keeping.
  • Provide expert consultation on electrical matters to other technicians, offering guidance and support in resolving particularly challenging or unusual electronic faults.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Diagnostics: Proficiency in using OEM and aftermarket diagnostic scan tools (e.g., Snap-on, Bosch, Autel), oscilloscopes, and digital multimeters to analyze system data and pinpoint faults.
  • Schematic Interpretation: The ability to read, understand, and apply complex electrical wiring diagrams and schematics to trace circuits and diagnose issues effectively.
  • Wiring & Repair: Expertise in soldering, crimping, de-pinning connectors, and repairing or building wiring harnesses to OEM standards.
  • System Knowledge: In-depth understanding of vehicle electrical and electronic systems, including charging, starting, lighting, engine management, and body control modules.
  • Network Communication: Familiarity with vehicle communication networks like CAN (Controller Area Network), LIN, and FlexRay for diagnosing communication errors between modules.
  • HVAC Electrics: Strong knowledge of the electrical components and controls within automotive air conditioning systems.
  • EV/Hybrid Systems: Knowledge of high-voltage system architecture and the critical safety procedures required when working on electric and hybrid vehicles.

  • An Associate's Degree in Automotive Technology or Electrical Engineering Technology.
  • ASE Certifications, particularly A6 (Electrical/Electronic Systems), A7 (Heating and Air Conditioning), and L1 (Advanced Engine Performance Specialist).

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 3-7 years of professional, hands-on experience working as an automotive electrician or a diagnostic technician in a dealership, independent repair shop, or fleet maintenance facility.
