Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assemble and disassemble prototype, pre-production, and competitor benchmark vehicles, including complex body, chassis, powertrain, and interior systems according to engineering drawings and work instructions.
  • Install, configure, and troubleshoot a wide range of data acquisition (DAQ) equipment and vehicle instrumentation, such as thermocouples, pressure transducers, strain gauges, and accelerometers for specific test cases.
  • Perform complex vehicle-level diagnostic and troubleshooting procedures using CAN/LIN communication tools (e.g., Vector CANalyzer, ETAS INCA) to identify the root cause of electrical and system-level faults.
  • Execute standardized and custom test procedures on vehicles, systems, and components, both in a lab environment and on test tracks, to validate performance, durability, and safety metrics.
  • Fabricate and modify custom brackets, fixtures, and wiring harnesses using welding, machining, and general fabrication skills to support unique instrumentation setups or component integration challenges.
  • Conduct full vehicle retrofits and component-level updates, ensuring all changes to hardware and software are executed with precision and documented thoroughly.
  • Perform precision mechanical and electrical work, including vehicle alignments, brake system services, and certified high-voltage system de-powering/re-powering procedures on electric vehicles (EVs).
  • Maintain and repair the fleet of development vehicles to ensure they are in optimal and safe operating condition for ongoing, demanding test programs.
  • Collaborate directly with design, release, and test engineers to provide real-time, hands-on feedback, suggest design improvements, and assist in resolving complex integration issues.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of sophisticated shop equipment, including vehicle hoists, chassis dynamometers, diagnostic hardware, and fabrication tools.
  • Lead the root cause analysis for complex electrical, mechanical, and software issues, often requiring deep dives into vehicle subsystems and control module logic.
  • Flash and update vehicle control module software, verifying successful installation and basic functionality post-update to support development cycles.
  • Conduct comprehensive vehicle inspections and functional checks before and after test events to ensure data integrity and overall vehicle safety.
  • Perform tear-down analysis of failed components or full vehicles to support engineering investigations and continuous improvement efforts.

Secondary Functions

  • Document all build activities, test results, and observed anomalies with meticulous detail using digital tracking systems (like JIRA) and clear, concise written reports.
  • Support vehicle-level testing at off-site locations, which may include extreme weather proving grounds, public road evaluations, or specialized test facilities, sometimes requiring travel.
  • Provide clear, objective daily reports to program management and engineering teams summarizing work accomplished, roadblocks encountered, and next steps.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and highly organized workshop environment in compliance with all corporate and regulatory safety protocols (e.g., 5S, OSHA).
  • Manage the inventory of prototype parts, specialized tools, and consumables for assigned vehicle programs, ensuring availability for planned work and preventing delays.
  • Assist in the development and refinement of new build processes and test procedures to improve team efficiency, safety, and data quality.
  • Mentor and train junior technicians on new vehicle systems, diagnostic techniques, and established lab procedures.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep proficiency in automotive diagnostic tools and software (Vector CANalyzer/CANoe, ETAS INCA, P-CAN, or similar).
  • Strong understanding of modern vehicle electrical systems and architectures, with a proven ability to read and interpret complex wiring schematics.
  • Hands-on fabrication skills, including MIG/TIG welding, machining (lathe, mill), and general metalwork.
  • Expertise in installing and using Data Acquisition (DAQ) systems and various sensors for vehicle testing.
  • High-Voltage (HV) system certification and safety training for work on electric and hybrid vehicles is highly desirable.
  • ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications (e.g., A6, A7, A8, L1) are a significant asset.
  • Mastery of a wide range of mechanical and electrical hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to perform complete vehicle tear-downs and re-assemblies with precision and care.
  • Knowledge of vehicle CAN, LIN, and Automotive Ethernet communication protocols.
  • Competency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) for reporting and data organization.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED combined with significant, relevant professional experience.
  • An Associate's Degree in Automotive Technology or a related discipline is strongly preferred.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a similar hands-on technical field.
