Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Perform comprehensive diagnostics on complex vehicle systems, including engine, transmission, electrical, and climate control, using advanced scan tools and diagnostic equipment to pinpoint root causes.
Execute a wide range of mechanical and electrical repairs with precision, from engine overhauls and transmission replacements to intricate wiring and module programming.
Conduct thorough multi-point vehicle inspections to identify existing and potential issues, providing detailed reports and service recommendations to Service Advisors.
Test-drive vehicles before and after repairs to verify customer complaints and ensure all work has been completed successfully and safely.
Address and resolve challenging drivability issues, noises, and intermittent problems by applying systematic diagnostic strategies and technical expertise.
Perform routine and preventative maintenance services, including oil changes, fluid exchanges, tire rotations, and filter replacements, according to manufacturer specifications.
Service and repair braking systems, including replacement of pads, rotors, calipers, and hydraulic components, and perform ABS diagnostics.
Diagnose and repair suspension and steering systems, performing wheel alignments to ensure proper vehicle handling and tire longevity.
Execute repairs under warranty guidelines, ensuring all procedures and documentation adhere to strict manufacturer standards.
Service and repair vehicle HVAC systems, including performance testing, leak detection, and refrigerant evacuation and recharge in compliance with Section 609 regulations.
Calibrate and service Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) such as lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and collision avoidance systems.
Utilize technical service bulletins, wiring diagrams, and online repair manuals to stay informed and perform repairs based on the latest manufacturer procedures.

Secondary Functions

Meticulously document all diagnostic steps, work performed, and parts used on each repair order to ensure a clear and accurate service history.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, accounting for all shop tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment.
Communicate effectively and professionally with Service Advisors regarding vehicle status, necessary repairs, required parts, and estimated completion times.
Participate in and complete ongoing training and certification programs (e.g., ASE, manufacturer-specific) to keep skills current with evolving automotive technology.
Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior technicians and apprentices, fostering a collaborative and knowledgeable team environment.
Assist in maintaining shop equipment, reporting any malfunctions or needs for repair to ensure operational readiness.
Adhere to all company safety policies and procedures, as well as local, state, and federal regulations, including hazardous waste disposal.
Manage workflow and prioritize repair orders efficiently to meet deadlines and maximize productivity without sacrificing quality.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Advanced Diagnostics: Proficiency with modern diagnostic scan tools (e.g., Autel, Snap-on, OEM software) and oscilloscopes for in-depth system analysis.
ASE Certifications: Possession of multiple ASE certifications (A1-A8) is highly desirable; Master Technician status is a significant plus.
Brake and Suspension Systems: Expertise in the diagnosis, repair, and replacement of brake, steering, and suspension components, including wheel alignments.
Electrical System Troubleshooting: Strong ability to read wiring diagrams and diagnose complex electrical issues, including shorts, opens, and module communication errors.
Engine Performance: Deep knowledge of fuel injection, ignition, and emission control systems for effective drivability diagnosis and repair.
HVAC Service: Certification in refrigerant handling (MACS or Section 609) and the ability to service modern automotive air conditioning systems.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-7 years of professional, hands-on experience as a vehicle repair technician in a dealership or independent repair facility.

Preferred:

Experience with European, Asian, or specific domestic brands may be required depending on the shop's specialty.
A valid driver's license and a clean driving record are required.
