Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Act as the primary technical liaison between central engineering teams and field service technicians to resolve complex vehicle system issues related to electronics, software, and mechanical components.
  • Perform in-depth root cause analysis on escalated service concerns, utilizing advanced diagnostic equipment, data logging tools, and fundamental engineering principles to identify the source of failure.
  • Travel frequently to customer sites, dealerships, or service centers to provide on-site, hands-on diagnostic support and troubleshooting for critical vehicle-down or high-priority situations.
  • Develop, validate, and publish official service bulletins, repair procedures, and diagnostic guides for use by the wider service network, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and serviceability.
  • Capture and meticulously document vehicle data, customer feedback, and failure modes to create comprehensive, data-driven field reports for product engineering and quality assurance teams.
  • Lead remote diagnostic sessions with field technicians, expertly guiding them through complex troubleshooting steps for electrical, mechanical, and software-related problems.
  • Validate new vehicle software releases and hardware components from a serviceability perspective, providing critical feedback to R&D on potential field issues before product launch.
  • Design and deliver specialized technical training programs for service technicians, focusing on new vehicle technologies, complex systems (like EV/ADAS), and advanced diagnostic strategies.
  • Analyze warranty claim data and field intelligence reports to identify emerging failure trends, and proactively develop containment plans and engineering countermeasures.
  • Collaborate directly with design and release engineers to influence future product designs for improved reliability, serviceability, and diagnostics based on real-world field data.
  • Manage and maintain a fleet of engineering test vehicles, ensuring they are properly equipped and configured for specific diagnostic investigations and validation tasks.
  • Replicate and diagnose intermittent and difficult-to-reproduce customer complaints in a controlled workshop environment or through targeted, data-logged test drives.
  • Interface directly with Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers to investigate component-level failures and drive corrective actions throughout the supply chain to prevent recurrence.
  • Provide expert-level technical support for complex vehicle systems including high-voltage (HV) batteries, electric drivetrains, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), and connected vehicle platforms.
  • Utilize CAN, LIN, and Automotive Ethernet diagnostic tools like Vector CANalyzer to intercept and analyze vehicle network communications for troubleshooting complex system interactions.
  • Author detailed technical reports that clearly communicate findings, root cause, and recommended permanent solutions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders across the business.
  • Support the development and testing of new special service tools and diagnostic software, ensuring they are effective, robust, and user-friendly for technicians in the field.
  • Act as the subject matter expert (SME) during critical vehicle launch phases, providing real-time support and rapid problem-solving for the initial wave of field issues.
  • Champion a "Fix It Right the First Time" culture by providing clear, concise, and accurate repair information and diagnostic support to the entire service network.
  • Evaluate competitor vehicles to benchmark service procedures, diagnostic strategies, special tools, and overall vehicle construction and technology to inform internal development.
  • Manage the technical escalation process for high-priority cases, ensuring timely communication and resolution while minimizing vehicle downtime and customer dissatisfaction.
  • Participate in regular cross-functional meetings with quality, manufacturing, and engineering departments to represent the "voice of the service technician" and the "voice of the customer."

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis of field failure data to uncover hidden trends.
  • Contribute to the organization's internal knowledge base and technical documentation repository.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency with OEM-level automotive diagnostic software (e.g., ODIS, ISTA, GDS2, or proprietary tools).
  • Strong understanding of Controller Area Network (CAN), LIN, and Automotive Ethernet protocols and associated analysis tools (e.g., Vector CANalyzer/CANoe, PCAN).
  • In-depth knowledge of modern vehicle electrical architectures, including ECUs, gateways, sensors, and actuators.
  • Certified experience diagnosing and servicing high-voltage (HV) systems in electric (EV) or hybrid (PHEV/HEV) vehicles.
  • Advanced hands-on ability to use workshop tools, including digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, and data loggers.
  • Deep understanding of internal combustion engines, transmissions, and driveline systems, as well as EV propulsion systems.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:
