Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Supervise, lead, and support a team of automotive technicians, directing their daily work and fostering a positive, productive team environment.
  • Manage the shop's workflow by effectively dispatching, prioritizing, and tracking repair orders to maximize technician efficiency and meet promised delivery times.
  • Provide expert technical guidance and hands-on assistance to technicians for complex vehicle diagnostics, troubleshooting, and challenging repairs.
  • Conduct thorough quality control inspections on all completed work to ensure repairs are performed correctly the first time, meeting both company and manufacturer standards.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for escalated customer service issues, working to resolve concerns promptly and professionally to maintain high levels of customer satisfaction.
  • Collaborate closely with Service Advisors to ensure clear and accurate communication with customers regarding repair estimates, status updates, and necessary approvals.
  • Enforce strict adherence to all workplace safety protocols (including OSHA standards) and environmental regulations to maintain a safe and compliant service facility.
  • Monitor individual and team performance metrics, including productivity, efficiency, and comeback rates, providing constructive feedback and coaching to drive improvement.
  • Oversee the maintenance, repair, and calibration of all shop tools and diagnostic equipment, ensuring they are in safe and optimal working condition.
  • Perform road tests on vehicles to verify customer complaints and confirm that repairs have resolved the initial issue.
  • Maintain precise and detailed records of all services and repairs performed using our shop management software.
  • Assist in appraising vehicle damage and developing accurate, comprehensive estimates for repair work.
  • Manage the proper handling and documentation for warranty repairs, ensuring compliance with manufacturer guidelines for claim submission.
  • Lead daily team meetings or huddles to discuss work assignments, safety topics, and operational goals.
  • Ensure the overall cleanliness, organization, and professional appearance of the service bays and the entire shop floor.

Secondary Functions

  • Participate in the recruitment, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding process for new automotive technicians.
  • Develop and implement ongoing technical training programs for the service team to keep their skills current with emerging vehicle technologies.
  • Assist the Service Manager with budget planning, expense control, and monitoring of departmental financial performance.
  • Track and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) to identify trends, pinpoint areas for process improvement, and report on departmental performance to upper management.
  • Manage relationships with parts suppliers and external vendors to ensure the timely procurement of high-quality parts and services.
  • Champion the adoption of new technologies and standard operating procedures (SOPs) designed to enhance shop efficiency and service quality.
  • Coordinate with the parts department to manage the inventory of essential shop supplies, tools, and commonly used components.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • ASE Certifications: ASE Master Technician certification is highly preferred.
  • Diagnostic Expertise: Advanced proficiency with modern diagnostic scan tools, software, and equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes, multimeters).
  • Vehicle Systems Knowledge: Comprehensive, in-depth understanding of complex automotive systems, including electrical, powertrain, HVAC, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).
  • Shop Management Software: Experience using industry-standard shop management systems (e.g., Reynolds & Reynolds, CDK Global, Mitchell1, ALLDATA).
  • Warranty Administration: Solid understanding of manufacturer warranty policies and claim submission procedures.
  • Safety Compliance: Thorough knowledge of OSHA regulations and standard shop safety practices.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Certificate from a vocational or technical school in Automotive Technology.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 5-7 years of progressive experience in an automotive repair environment, including at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory capacity (e.g., Lead Technician, Shop Foreman).

  • Experience in a dealership or high-volume independent repair facility.
  • Verifiable track record of improving team performance and key operational metrics.
  • Experience managing maintenance for a commercial or government vehicle fleet.
