Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive multi-point inspections and accurately diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, and computer system issues using advanced diagnostic equipment and manufacturer-specific software.
  • Execute a wide range of vehicle repairs, from routine maintenance like fluid services and brake jobs to major component replacements like engine and transmission overhauls, strictly adhering to manufacturer specifications.
  • Conduct thorough road tests on vehicles before and after service to confirm customer complaints, verify the effectiveness of repairs, and ensure the vehicle operates safely and meets quality standards.
  • Maintain meticulous and accurate service records, documenting all diagnostic steps, repairs performed, parts used, and labor time for each work order using our digital shop management system.
  • Clearly and concisely communicate complex technical findings, diagnoses, and repair recommendations to Service Advisors, enabling them to provide accurate estimates and clear explanations to our valued customers.
  • Utilize technical service bulletins (TSBs), online repair manuals, and manufacturer databases to stay current with the latest automotive technology, recalls, and repair procedures.
  • Diagnose and repair complex heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, including performing system evacuations and recharges in full compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Perform precise four-wheel alignments and tire balancing services using modern alignment racks and balancing machines to ensure optimal vehicle handling, safety, and tire longevity.
  • Address and resolve any vehicle comebacks or recurring issues by performing in-depth follow-up diagnostics to identify and rectify the root cause of the problem permanently.
  • Calibrate and service Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS), including cameras, radar, and sensors, to ensure their proper function following collision repairs, part replacements, or alignments.
  • Diagnose and repair intricate electrical system issues, including wiring harnesses, control modules, and sensor circuits, by expertly interpreting wiring diagrams and using specialized testing equipment.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment by following all safety protocols, properly maintaining personal and shop tools, and adhering to company and OSHA guidelines.
  • Participate actively in ongoing manufacturer-sponsored and dealership-provided training to maintain certifications and continuously update technical skills on new vehicle models and emerging technologies.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to apprentice technicians, sharing knowledge and demonstrating best practices to foster team development and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Manage personal productivity and efficiency to meet or exceed established shop performance goals and contribute to the overall success of the service department.
  • Inspect and test new vehicles as part of the Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) process to ensure they are free of defects and perfectly prepared for customer delivery.
  • Perform state-mandated vehicle safety and emissions inspections, accurately completing all required documentation and ensuring vehicles comply with all regulations.
  • Proactively identify potential future repair needs or safety concerns during inspections and communicate these findings to the service advisor for customer awareness and preventative maintenance opportunities.
  • Handle, manage, and dispose of hazardous materials, such as used oil, coolant, and other fluids, in strict accordance with all environmental and safety regulations.
  • Maintain accountability for all dealership-owned special tools and manuals, ensuring they are returned to their proper location in the same condition they were received.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist Service Advisors in clarifying technical details for customers when necessary to ensure understanding and trust.
  • Maintain shop equipment in good working order and promptly report any broken or malfunctioning tools to the Shop Foreman or Service Manager.
  • Collaborate with the parts department to ensure the correct parts are sourced and available for repair jobs, minimizing vehicle downtime.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to a positive, collaborative, and professional workshop culture.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency in using advanced diagnostic scan tools (e.g., Snap-on, Autel, OEM-specific software like GDS2, ODIS, or ISTA).
  • Strong understanding of automotive electrical systems, with a proven ability to read and interpret complex wiring diagrams.
  • Expertise in engine and transmission diagnostics, repair, and replacement.
  • Competence in brake systems, suspension, and steering component diagnosis and repair, including electronic braking and steering systems.
  • Valid Section 609 Certification for HVAC system diagnosis, evacuation, and recharge procedures.
  • Skill in performing precision wheel alignments on modern, computerized alignment racks.
  • Knowledge of Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) principles and calibration procedures.
  • ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications in multiple areas are highly desired (A1-A8 Engine Repair, Brakes, Suspension & Steering, etc.).
  • Experience with hybrid and/or electric vehicle (EV) high-voltage systems and safety protocols is a significant plus.
  • Ability to effectively use digital service manuals and online technical resources for research and repair information.
  • Proficiency with a wide array of automotive service equipment, including vehicle lifts, tire machines, fluid exchange machines, and specialty tools.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid Driver's License and a clean driving record.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's Degree or Technical Certificate from an accredited Automotive Technology program.

Relevant Fields of Study:

  • Automotive Technology
  • Mechanical Engineering Technology

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-5+ years of hands-on experience as a professional automotive technician in a dealership or independent repair shop setting.

Preferred: ASE Master Technician certification and/or manufacturer-specific training credentials (e.g., GM, Ford, Toyota, or European brands). Experience working in a flat-rate pay system is beneficial.
