Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop and architect comprehensive Design Verification Plans and Reports (DVP&R) for full-vehicle and subsystem-level testing programs in collaboration with client engineering teams.
  • Design, orchestrate, and execute a wide array of vehicle tests, including durability, performance, climatic (hot/cold weather), corrosion, and regulatory compliance evaluations on proving grounds, public roads, and in-lab environments.
  • Instrument test vehicles with advanced data acquisition (DAQ) systems, sensors, and logging equipment to capture critical performance parameters for powertrain, chassis, thermal, and electrical systems.
  • Lead the end-to-end root cause analysis process for complex vehicle issues discovered during testing, utilizing structured problem-solving methodologies to identify and recommend robust corrective actions.
  • Analyze large, complex datasets from vehicle testing using tools like MATLAB, nCode, or Python to evaluate performance, identify trends, and validate system functionality against engineering targets.
  • Author highly detailed, technical test reports and executive summaries, clearly communicating procedures, results, data analysis, and strategic recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Serve as the primary technical consultant for clients, providing expert guidance on test strategies, industry best practices, and emerging technologies in the vehicle validation space.
  • Manage the logistics and operational readiness of test vehicle fleets, including maintenance scheduling, instrumentation, and vehicle-level software/hardware updates.
  • Conduct subjective and objective vehicle evaluations for attributes such as Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH), ride and handling, and overall vehicle dynamics.
  • Perform competitive vehicle benchmarking by developing test plans to objectively measure and compare client products against key competitors, delivering data-driven market insights.
  • Validate the integration and performance of Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS), including sensor fusion, functional safety (ISO 26262), and real-world scenario testing.
  • Plan and oversee powertrain testing for various architectures, including internal combustion engines (ICE), hybrid (HEV), and battery electric vehicles (BEV), focusing on efficiency, performance, and durability.
  • Ensure all testing activities are conducted in strict compliance with internal safety protocols, external regulations, and proving ground safety requirements.
  • Interface directly with design, simulation, and manufacturing teams to provide critical feedback from physical testing, influencing future product design and reducing development cycles.
  • Develop and refine standardized testing procedures and methodologies to improve the efficiency, accuracy, and repeatability of the validation process.
  • Manage project timelines, resources, and budgets for multiple testing projects simultaneously, ensuring on-time and on-budget delivery of results to clients.
  • Evaluate and validate vehicle software functionality and hardware-software integration, conducting regression testing and diagnosing CAN communication issues.
  • Support homologation activities by planning and executing tests required to meet specific regional government regulations and standards (e.g., FMVSS, ECE).
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and technicians, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement within the team.
  • Stay abreast of the latest advancements in vehicle technology, testing equipment, and industry standards (SAE, ISO) to ensure consulting services remain best-in-class.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis to uncover latent issues or performance trends.
  • Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap, particularly concerning test data management and analytics.
  • Collaborate with business units to translate data needs into engineering requirements for future testing capabilities.
  • Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the data engineering and product development teams.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Data Acquisition (DAQ): Expertise with DAQ systems and software such as Vector CANape/CANalyzer, ETAS INCA, Dewesoft, or Somat eDAQ.
  • Data Analysis: Proficiency in analyzing and post-processing test data using MATLAB, nCode GlyphWorks, DIAdem, or scripting languages like Python.
  • CAN/LIN Bus Analysis: Deep understanding of vehicle communication protocols and extensive experience with tools like CANoe to diagnose network issues.
  • Vehicle Systems Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of vehicle subsystems including powertrain (EV/ICE), chassis, suspension, braking, and electronic control systems.
  • DVP&R Development: Demonstrated ability to create and manage complex Design Verification Plans & Reports from scratch.
  • Root Cause Analysis: Mastery of structured problem-solving methodologies (e.g., 8D, Fishbone, 5 Whys).
  • Test Instrumentation: Hands-on experience with vehicle instrumentation, including thermocouples, accelerometers, strain gauges, and GPS/IMU systems.
  • Regulatory Standards: Familiarity with automotive industry standards such as SAE, ISO 26262, and government regulations (FMVSS, ECE).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in an engineering discipline.
