Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Architect and command the overarching vehicle test and validation strategy for all new vehicle programs, ensuring alignment with corporate objectives, product requirements, and launch timelines.
  • Direct the development and execution of the master Design Verification Plan & Report (DVP&R), guaranteeing comprehensive test coverage from the component and subsystem level through to full vehicle integration.
  • Provide decisive leadership, strategic direction, and career mentorship to a large, multi-disciplinary organization of test managers, engineers, prototype technicians, and administrative staff.
  • Hold ultimate accountability for the departmental budget, including annual operational planning, capital expenditure justification for new test facilities and equipment, and rigorous cost control.
  • Oversee the entire fleet of prototype and pre-production vehicles, managing their allocation, build verification, instrumentation, maintenance, and end-of-life scrappage.
  • Act as the final authority on test issue resolution, guiding teams through complex root cause analysis and ensuring robust corrective actions are implemented and validated.
  • Champion a world-class safety culture across all test environments, including proving grounds, test tracks, and laboratory facilities, ensuring compliance with all internal and external safety standards.
  • Forge and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with cross-functional leadership in Design, Engineering, Program Management, Manufacturing, and Supply Chain to ensure seamless program execution.
  • Deliver clear, concise, and compelling executive-level presentations on test status, critical risks, and validation results to the C-suite and other key stakeholders.
  • Direct all activities related to vehicle homologation and certification, ensuring all products meet or exceed regulatory requirements for all target markets (e.g., FMVSS, ECE, CARB).
  • Drive the continuous improvement of testing methodologies, processes, and tools to increase efficiency, reduce lead times, and enhance data quality and analytical capabilities.
  • Define and manage the strategy for both physical and virtual testing, integrating simulation, Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL), and Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) to optimize the validation process.
  • Oversee the specification, procurement, and commissioning of all vehicle test equipment, instrumentation, and data acquisition (DAQ) systems to maintain a state-of-the-art testing capability.
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for the testing organization, tracking progress against vehicle development milestones and departmental goals.
  • Lead the evaluation and implementation of new testing technologies and industry best practices to maintain the company's competitive edge in product validation.
  • Manage relationships and contracts with external third-party test houses, proving grounds, and specialized consulting services to augment in-house capabilities.
  • Personally review and approve critical test reports and provide the final engineering gateway approval for major program milestones, including vehicle launch readiness.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive talent development and succession plan for the vehicle testing organization to ensure long-term bench strength and technical expertise.
  • Guide the validation strategy for new and emerging technologies, such as advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), autonomous driving features, and connected vehicle services.
  • Serve as the company's primary subject matter expert in vehicle testing during external audits, regulatory inquiries, or high-stakes litigation scenarios.

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Vehicle Dynamics & Kinematics: Deep understanding of vehicle ride, handling, braking, and overall dynamic behavior.
  • Data Acquisition (DAQ) & Instrumentation: Expertise with industry-standard DAQ systems, sensors, and vehicle network protocols (CAN, LIN, Automotive Ethernet).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering discipline.

Preferred Education:

  • Master of Science in Engineering (MS) or a Master of Business Administration (MBA).

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 15+ years of progressive experience in automotive engineering, with at least 7-10 years in a direct leadership role overseeing vehicle-level testing, validation, or development activities.

Preferred:

  • Direct, hands-on experience leading the validation and launch of multiple full vehicle programs from concept through to mass production.
  • Extensive experience with both traditional Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) and modern Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) architectures and their unique validation challenges.
  • A demonstrated history of building or significantly transforming a vehicle testing organization, including establishing new processes, facilities, and teams.
