Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute a wide range of established vehicle test procedures on prototypes and pre-production models to evaluate performance, durability, and reliability.
  • Operate vehicles under specified and often demanding conditions on test tracks, dynamometers, and public roads to simulate customer usage and extreme environmental scenarios.
  • Install, calibrate, and operate sophisticated data acquisition systems (DAQ), sensors, and instrumentation to capture precise vehicle performance data, including CAN bus information.
  • Conduct thorough pre-test and post-test vehicle inspections, documenting vehicle condition, identifying anomalies, and ensuring test readiness and safety.
  • Perform subjective vehicle evaluations, providing detailed, expert feedback on handling, ride comfort, braking, NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness), and overall drivability.
  • Author clear, concise, and accurate test reports, summarizing objective data and subjective findings for engineering, quality, and program management teams.
  • Identify, document, and troubleshoot vehicle issues, system malfunctions, or performance deviations encountered during testing, providing initial diagnostic insights.
  • Ensure all testing activities are conducted in strict adherence to company safety protocols, proving ground regulations, and relevant government standards (e.g., FMVSS, ECE).
  • Drive vehicles through standardized durability schedules, accumulating mileage under controlled conditions to assess long-term wear and component life.
  • Perform specialized vehicle dynamics tests, such as lane changes, slalom, and braking maneuvers, to validate stability control systems and handling characteristics.
  • Conduct benchmark testing on competitor vehicles to gather comparative data and provide context for internal development targets.
  • Manage the logistics of test vehicles, including scheduling, transportation, maintenance coordination, and ensuring they are in the correct build configuration for planned tests.
  • Maintain impeccable and confidential records of all test activities, vehicle modifications, and data collected throughout the development cycle.
  • Participate in root cause analysis sessions with engineering teams to help diagnose complex issues discovered during validation.

Secondary Functions

  • Support the development and refinement of new test procedures and evaluation methodologies to improve efficiency and data quality.
  • Assist in the fabrication and installation of test fixtures, brackets, and instrumentation mounts on prototype vehicles.
  • Provide expert driver support for engineering development trips, media events, and customer clinics as required.
  • Mentor and train junior technicians or new officers on standard operating procedures, driving techniques, and safety protocols.
  • Contribute to the general maintenance and organization of test facilities, garages, and specialized test equipment.
  • Collaborate with instrumentation and facility teams to ensure equipment is functional, calibrated, and available for scheduled tests.
  • Maintain a high level of proficiency and certification for specialized driving maneuvers and high-performance vehicle operation.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Driving Proficiency: Certified or demonstrable expert-level driving skills, including defensive driving, performance driving, and operating vehicles in adverse conditions. A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is mandatory.
  • Data Acquisition Systems: Hands-on experience with automotive data logging tools and software such as Vector CANalyzer/CANoe, DEWESoft, ETAS INCA, or similar systems.
  • Vehicle Systems Knowledge: Strong understanding of core vehicle systems, including powertrain, chassis, suspension, brakes, and electrical architecture.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Ability to perform basic vehicle maintenance, part swaps, and instrumentation installation using standard hand and power tools.
