- Conduct rigorous subjective and objective evaluations of vehicle characteristics, including ride and handling, noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH), and overall drivability, providing clear and actionable feedback.
- Analyze large datasets collected during testing using software like MATLAB, Python, or Dewesoft to identify performance deviations, anomalies, and potential failure modes.
- Perform systematic troubleshooting and root cause analysis of vehicle system issues discovered during testing, collaborating with design and systems engineers to develop effective countermeasures.
- Author detailed, high-quality test reports that clearly document test procedures, data analysis, observed issues, and recommendations for engineering teams and management.
- Manage and maintain a fleet of test vehicles, overseeing vehicle logistics, scheduling, maintenance, and ensuring all vehicles are in proper test-ready condition.
- Develop and validate new test procedures and methodologies to improve testing efficiency, data accuracy, and coverage for emerging vehicle technologies like ADAS and EV powertrains.
- Operate and maintain specialized laboratory test equipment, such as chassis dynamometers, environmental chambers, and four-post shakers, to simulate specific road and climate conditions.
- Ensure all testing activities are conducted safely and in strict compliance with internal safety protocols, proving ground regulations, and federal/regional vehicle standards (e.g., FMVSS, ECE).
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including design, simulation, and quality engineering, to provide critical test-based feedback throughout the product development lifecycle.
- Lead the setup and execution of benchmark testing on competitor vehicles to establish performance targets and identify competitive advantages or disadvantages.
- Diagnose and resolve complex electrical and software issues using diagnostic tools, CAN communication analyzers (e.g., CANalyzer, CANape), and other debugging equipment.
- Fabricate and install custom test fixtures, brackets, and sensor mounts as needed to support unique instrumentation requirements for specific test campaigns.
- Review and interpret engineering requirements, specifications, and design documents to develop relevant and thorough test cases that validate system functionality.
- Maintain meticulous records of all test activities, vehicle configurations, software versions, and instrumentation setups to ensure test repeatability and traceability.
- Support the resolution of customer-facing issues by replicating reported field problems in a controlled test environment to assist in root cause investigation.
- Conduct static and dynamic tests on specific vehicle subsystems, such as powertrain, chassis, brakes, infotainment, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).
- Coordinate with external labs and proving grounds to schedule and execute specialized tests that cannot be performed in-house.
Secondary Functions
- Support ad-hoc test requests and conduct exploratory analysis on vehicle performance data.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of the department's testing methodologies and data validation strategy.
- Collaborate with design and systems engineering units to translate product requirements into robust test cases.
- Participate in project planning meetings and daily stand-ups to report on testing progress and blockers.
