Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Direct and oversee the daily activities of a team of vehicle test technicians, assigning workloads, setting priorities, and ensuring efficient execution of all testing procedures.
  • Develop, manage, and communicate detailed vehicle test schedules, coordinating with engineering, program management, and other cross-functional teams to align on priorities and timelines.
  • Act as the primary safety champion for the test group, enforcing all safety policies, conducting regular safety audits, and ensuring all personnel are properly trained on equipment and vehicle-specific hazards.
  • Supervise the preparation and instrumentation of test vehicles, including the installation of data acquisition systems, sensors, and any specialized hardware required for specific test plans.
  • Provide hands-on technical guidance and troubleshooting support to technicians, assisting in the diagnosis of complex vehicle issues and instrumentation problems that arise during testing.
  • Review and validate test data for accuracy and completeness, ensuring that all collected information meets the requirements set forth by the requesting engineering teams.
  • Manage the maintenance, calibration, and inventory of all test equipment, diagnostic tools, and workshop resources to ensure operational readiness and minimize downtime.
  • Lead root cause analysis investigations for test failures, vehicle malfunctions, or process deviations, collaborating with engineers to identify and implement effective corrective actions.
  • Author, review, and approve standard operating procedures (SOPs) for various test activities, ensuring clarity, repeatability, and safety are embedded in every process.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews, provide constructive feedback, and identify training and development opportunities to foster the professional growth of your team members.
  • Coordinate all logistical aspects of on-road and proving ground test trips, including vehicle transport, driver scheduling, route planning, and securing necessary permits.
  • Serve as the main point of contact between the technician team and the broader engineering organization, effectively communicating test status, blockers, and results.
  • Manage the test garage or lab environment, ensuring it remains organized, clean, and compliant with all company and regulatory standards (e.g., 5S principles).
  • Track and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) for test operations, such as test completion rates, vehicle uptime, and budget adherence.
  • Oversee the procurement of necessary tools, equipment, and consumables, managing the operational budget for the test team and identifying opportunities for cost savings.
  • Ensure all test activities are meticulously documented, from daily logs and driver notes to formal incident reports, creating a clear and auditable record of the vehicle's test history.

Secondary Functions

  • Support engineering teams with initial data analysis and the creation of summary reports to highlight key findings and trends from recent test cycles.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of testing methodologies and processes by providing practical feedback and proposing innovative solutions to enhance efficiency and data quality.
  • Collaborate with facility management and EHS (Environment, Health & Safety) teams to develop and refine emergency response plans specific to the vehicle test environment.
  • Participate in design and validation reviews for new vehicle programs, offering insights from a testing and serviceability perspective to influence future product development.
  • Mentor junior engineers and interns, providing them with practical exposure to vehicle-level testing and hands-on hardware experience.
  • Assist in the specification and commissioning of new test facilities and capital equipment, ensuring they meet the future needs of the organization.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Vehicle Systems Expertise: Deep, hands-on knowledge of modern vehicle architectures, including powertrain (ICE/EV/Hybrid), chassis, braking, and high/low voltage electrical systems.
  • Data Acquisition (DAQ): Proficiency with industry-standard data acquisition systems and software (e.g., Vector CANalyzer/CANoe, ETAS INCA, Dewesoft, Somat eDAQ).
  • CAN/LIN Bus Communication: Strong understanding of vehicle communication protocols, with the ability to troubleshoot network issues and analyze bus traffic.
  • Diagnostic Tools: Expertise in using OEM and generic diagnostic scan tools to read fault codes, monitor live data, and perform system-level diagnostics.
  • Test Planning & Execution: Ability to read and interpret complex engineering test procedures and translate them into actionable work instructions for technicians.
  • Root Cause Analysis Methodologies: Familiarity with structured problem-solving techniques such as 8D, 5 Whys, or Fishbone Diagrams.
  • Workshop & Fabrication Skills: Practical knowledge of vehicle mechanics, hand/power tools, and light fabrication for creating test fixtures and brackets.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Associate's Degree in Automotive Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related technical field, OR equivalent military/vocational training and experience.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.

Experience Requirements
