Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Spearhead the daily management and leadership of the workshop team, including technicians, apprentices, and service support staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture.
  • Drive the operational workflow of the workshop, from job card creation and allocation to quality control and final vehicle handover, ensuring maximum technician efficiency and utilization.
  • Assume full accountability for the workshop's financial performance, including managing budgets, controlling operational costs, analyzing P&L statements, and implementing strategies to maximize profitability.
  • Act as the final point of escalation for complex customer issues, resolving complaints with professionalism and empathy to maintain high levels of customer satisfaction and retention.
  • Champion and enforce rigorous Health & Safety protocols throughout the workshop, ensuring full compliance with industry standards (e.g., OSHA, COSHH) and fostering a culture of safety-first.
  • Oversee the entire vehicle repair and maintenance process, providing technical guidance and ensuring all work meets or exceeds manufacturer specifications and quality standards.
  • Develop and implement robust quality control procedures, including regular spot-checks and final inspections, to minimize rework and guarantee the integrity of all completed jobs.
  • Manage and mentor the technical team, identifying skill gaps, organizing manufacturer-specific training, and creating personal development plans to enhance team capability.
  • Liaise directly with the Parts Department to ensure timely availability of necessary components, manage special orders, and control parts inventory to support workshop throughput.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) such as labor efficiency, productivity, recovery rates, and customer satisfaction index (CSI) scores, reporting findings and action plans to senior management.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews and one-on-one meetings with team members to provide constructive feedback, set clear objectives, and support their career progression.
  • Authorize and process warranty claims accurately and efficiently, ensuring compliance with manufacturer guidelines to maximize claim recovery and minimize dealership liability.
  • Stay abreast of the latest automotive technology, diagnostic equipment, and industry trends, including advancements in electric (EV) and hybrid vehicles, to ensure the workshop remains competitive.
  • Manage the procurement, maintenance, and calibration of all workshop tools and diagnostic equipment, ensuring the team has the resources needed to perform their jobs effectively.
  • Plan and forecast workshop capacity and labor requirements based on seasonal trends, marketing campaigns, and business objectives to ensure optimal staffing levels.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with suppliers, manufacturers, and external contractors to negotiate favorable terms and ensure reliable service.
