Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  1. Medical Standards & Quality Assurance: Establish, implement, and continuously refine medical protocols and standards of care across all locations to ensure the highest quality of medicine, patient safety, and clinical outcomes.
  2. Leadership & Team Development: Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of veterinarians and paraprofessionals, fostering a culture of continuous learning, professional growth, and positive engagement through regular check-ins, performance reviews, and coaching.
  3. Strategic Planning & Execution: Collaborate with senior leadership to develop and execute long-term strategic plans for clinical services, including the introduction of new medical technologies, services, and specialty care programs.
  4. Financial Oversight & Business Acumen: Drive the financial performance of veterinary services by partnering with hospital leadership to manage budgets, analyze Profit & Loss (P&L) statements, control inventory costs, and identify strategic opportunities for sustainable revenue growth.
  5. Veterinarian Recruitment & Retention: Spearhead the full-cycle recruitment process for veterinarians, from sourcing and interviewing to onboarding, while developing and implementing robust retention strategies to build a stable, long-term medical team.
  6. Regulatory Compliance & Safety: Ensure rigorous compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, including DEA, OSHA, and state veterinary board guidelines, and maintain all necessary hospital accreditations (e.g., AAHA).
  7. Client Experience & Reputation Management: Champion a culture of exceptional client service and communication, developing strategies to enhance the client experience, effectively resolve escalated concerns, and build a strong, positive reputation in the community.
  8. Operational Efficiency: Analyze and improve clinical workflows and operational processes to enhance efficiency, increase productivity, and optimize the allocation of resources without compromising the quality of care.
  9. Continuing Education Program Management: Design and oversee a comprehensive continuing education (CE) program for the medical team to ensure they remain at the forefront of veterinary medicine and meet licensing requirements.
  10. Inter-departmental Collaboration: Serve as the primary liaison between the medical staff and other departments (Operations, Finance, HR, Marketing) to ensure alignment of goals and seamless execution of company-wide initiatives.
  11. New Service Line Development: Research, propose, and lead the implementation of new medical service lines (e.g., rehabilitation, dentistry, urgent care) based on market analysis and community needs.
  12. Medical Equipment & Technology Strategy: Oversee the evaluation, selection, and implementation of new medical equipment and practice management software (PIMS) to enhance diagnostic and treatment capabilities.
  13. Performance Metrics & Reporting: Develop and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for medical quality, client satisfaction, and financial health, providing regular reports and actionable insights to the executive team.
  14. Mentorship of Medical Leaders: Directly mentor and train Lead Veterinarians and other aspiring medical leaders within the organization to build a strong succession pipeline.
  15. Case Consultation & Support: Act as a primary medical resource and point of escalation for complex clinical cases, providing guidance and support to Associate Veterinarians.

Secondary Functions

  • Represent the organization at professional conferences, veterinary schools, and community events to enhance brand visibility and build professional networks.
  • Lead the Medical Advisory Board or clinical governance committee meetings to review cases, discuss protocols, and drive clinical policy.
  • Manage relationships with key industry partners, including pharmaceutical companies, equipment suppliers, and diagnostic laboratories.
  • Develop and oversee externship and internship programs for veterinary students and new graduates.
  • Support marketing initiatives by providing clinical expertise for content creation, community outreach, and educational seminars.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  1. Advanced Clinical Proficiency: Deep, comprehensive knowledge in small animal internal medicine and surgery.
  2. DVM/VMD & State Licensure: Must hold a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris (VMD) degree and be able to maintain a license in good standing.
  3. Financial Acumen (P&L Management): Proven ability to read, interpret, and act upon financial statements, particularly P&L reports, to drive business performance.
  4. Regulatory Compliance: Expertise in local, state, and federal laws governing veterinary medicine, including DEA regulations, OSHA standards, and labor laws.
  5. Medical Protocol Development: Skill in creating, documenting, and implementing evidence-based medical and surgical protocols.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris (VMD) from an accredited university.
  • Active and unrestricted state veterinary license.

Preferred Education:

  • Master of Business Administration (MBA).
  • Board certification in a veterinary specialty (e.g., DACVIM, DACVS, ABVP).
  • Certified Veterinary Practice Manager (CVPM).

Experience Requirements
