Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive dermatological examinations on a variety of animal species to diagnose diseases affecting the skin, hair, ears, and claws.
  • Develop and implement sophisticated, multi-modal treatment plans for complex and chronic conditions such as atopic dermatitis, cutaneous adverse food reactions, and autoimmune skin diseases.
  • Perform and interpret advanced diagnostic procedures, including skin biopsies for histopathology, cutaneous cytology, deep skin scrapings, and fungal/bacterial cultures.
  • Execute and expertly interpret the results of intradermal allergy testing (IDAT) and in vitro (serum) allergy tests to identify environmental and food allergens.
  • Formulate and manage patient-specific allergen immunotherapy (ASIT), both sublingual (SLIT) and subcutaneous (SCIT), adjusting protocols based on patient response and clinical signs.
  • Utilize advanced imaging and diagnostic equipment, such as video otoscopy, for the thorough examination, flushing, and treatment of complex cases of otitis externa, media, and interna.
  • Provide expert consultation and guidance to primary care veterinarians on challenging dermatology cases, fostering a collaborative and educational relationship with the referring community.
  • Effectively communicate complex medical information, including diagnosis, long-term prognosis, and detailed treatment options, to pet owners in an empathetic and understandable manner.
  • Manage the therapeutic use of a wide range of pharmaceuticals, including immunomodulatory drugs (e.g., cyclosporine, oclacitinib), biologics, antibiotics, antifungals, and topical therapies.
  • Perform specialized surgical and non-surgical procedures such as cryosurgery, laser surgery for cutaneous masses, punch biopsies, and support for total ear canal ablation (TECA) cases.
  • Maintain meticulous and detailed electronic medical records (EMR) for all patients, ensuring accurate documentation of diagnoses, treatment plans, client communications, and follow-up care.
  • Champion a high standard of patient care and practice medicine in a manner that upholds the veterinary oath and the highest ethical standards of the profession.
  • Actively participate in continuing education (CE) to stay at the forefront of advancements in veterinary dermatology, immunology, and related pharmacology.
  • Contribute to the growth and reputation of the dermatology service by providing exceptional medical care and building strong, lasting relationships with clients and referring veterinarians.
  • Supervise, mentor, and provide clinical training for veterinary interns, residents, and technicians, fostering a positive and collaborative learning environment.
  • Manage a demanding caseload of appointments and re-checks, demonstrating excellent time management and organizational skills to ensure efficient clinic flow.
  • Diagnose and manage less common and challenging conditions, including congenital and hereditary skin defects, keratinization disorders, and cutaneous manifestations of systemic disease.
  • Develop and oversee protocols for infection control and biosecurity, particularly in cases involving contagious dermatophytes or resistant bacterial infections like MRSP.
  • Participate in hospital rounds, case discussions, and journal clubs to contribute to the collective knowledge and clinical excellence of the medical team.
  • Educate clients on the importance of preventative care, long-term management strategies for chronic conditions, and proper administration of medications to ensure treatment compliance and success.
  • Collaborate closely with other specialists (e.g., internists, surgeons, oncologists) within a multi-disciplinary hospital setting to provide comprehensive care for patients with co-morbidities.
  • Respond to and manage after-hours dermatological emergencies or provide on-call support for hospitalized patients as part of the specialty team.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) from an accredited university.
  • Completion of a one-year rotating internship or equivalent practice experience.
  • Completion of an American College of Veterinary Dermatology (ACVD) accredited residency program.

Preferred Education:

  • Board Certification as a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology (DACVD).
