Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform a variety of surgical procedures, including but not limited to spays, neuters, soft tissue surgeries (e.g., mass removals, foreign body removals), and potentially orthopedic procedures.
  • Conduct comprehensive physical examinations on a diverse range of animal patients to assess their health and diagnose potential medical issues.
  • Develop and execute detailed diagnostic plans, including interpreting results from X-rays, ultrasound, CT scans, bloodwork, urinalysis, and cytology.
  • Formulate and implement effective medical treatment plans for sick and injured animals, managing both acute and chronic conditions.
  • Administer and monitor anesthesia for surgical and diagnostic procedures, ensuring patient safety and stability throughout.
  • Provide exceptional dental care, including performing comprehensive oral health assessments, dental charting, scaling, polishing, and surgical extractions.
  • Manage medical emergencies with confidence and efficiency, including triage, stabilization, and critical care of patients.
  • Prescribe and administer medications, calculating appropriate dosages and educating clients on proper administration and potential side effects.
  • Maintain meticulous, accurate, and timely electronic medical records (EMR) for all patients, detailing examinations, diagnoses, treatments, and client communications.
  • Communicate complex medical information to clients with empathy and clarity, discussing diagnostic options, treatment plans, prognoses, and estimated costs.
  • Provide comprehensive preventative and wellness care, including administering vaccinations, parasite control, and nutritional counseling.
  • Lead the medical team during case management, effectively delegating tasks to and collaborating with veterinary technicians and support staff.
  • Uphold the highest standards of veterinary medicine and patient care, adhering to all hospital protocols and ethical guidelines.
  • Manage and oversee the care of hospitalized patients, ensuring their comfort, monitoring their progress, and adjusting treatment plans as necessary.
  • Perform humane euthanasia when necessary, providing compassionate support to pet owners during their time of grief.
  • Stay current with the latest advancements in veterinary medicine, surgery, and pharmacology through dedicated continuing education.

  • Diagnostic Imaging Interpretation: Skilled in reading and interpreting radiographs and ultrasound scans to accurately diagnose conditions.
  • Anesthesia Management: Deep understanding of anesthetic protocols, patient monitoring, and managing anesthetic complications.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris (VMD) degree from an AVMA-accredited university.
  • Active and clear state veterinary license, or the ability to obtain one.

Preferred Education:

  • Completion of a one-year rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery.
  • Board certification or eligibility for certification by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS).

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: While we welcome talented new graduates to apply, 2+ years of clinical experience in a general practice or emergency hospital setting is highly desirable.
