Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide comprehensive and compassionate nursing care to a variety of animal patients, including those who are hospitalized, recovering from surgery, or critically ill.
  • Skillfully induce, maintain, and monitor anesthesia during surgical and dental procedures, meticulously tracking vital signs and patient stability.
  • Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as prescribed by the veterinarian via various routes (oral, subcutaneous, intramuscular, intravenous).
  • Perform expert venipuncture for blood collection from various sites and proficiently place intravenous (IV) catheters for fluid and medication therapy.
  • Conduct thorough patient assessments and triage incoming emergencies to prioritize cases based on the severity of their condition.
  • Operate and maintain advanced diagnostic imaging equipment, including digital radiography (X-ray) and ultrasound machines, ensuring proper patient positioning and image quality.
  • Prepare patients, instruments, and the surgical suite for procedures, maintaining strict aseptic technique to prevent infection.
  • Act as a primary surgical assistant, anticipating the needs of the veterinarian by passing instruments, managing hemostasis, and monitoring the patient.
  • Collect, prepare, and analyze laboratory samples, performing in-house tests such as urinalysis, fecal analysis, cytology, and various blood tests.
  • Perform complete dental prophylactics, including supra and subgingival scaling, polishing, charting, and taking dental radiographs.
  • Educate clients on a wide range of topics, including preventative care, nutritional needs, post-operative instructions, and the proper administration of prescribed medications.
  • Accurately calculate drug dosages, CRIs (Constant Rate Infusions), and fluid rates, ensuring patient safety and treatment efficacy.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate patient medical records by documenting all treatments, procedures, communications, and observations in the practice management software.
  • Utilize low-stress and Fear Free® handling and restraint techniques for animals of all sizes, species, and temperaments to ensure the safety of both the patient and the team.
  • Provide compassionate support and clear communication to clients during emotionally challenging situations, including end-of-life care and euthanasia.

Secondary Functions

  • Manage and maintain the inventory of pharmaceuticals, controlled substances, and medical supplies, ensuring proper stock levels and compliance with regulations.
  • Contribute to the cleanliness, organization, and maintenance of all areas of the hospital, including examination rooms, treatment areas, and surgical suites.
  • Participate in ongoing continuing education and professional development to stay current with the latest advancements in veterinary medicine and technology.
  • Assist in training and mentoring new team members, including veterinary assistants and technician students, fostering a collaborative learning environment.

  • Anesthetic Monitoring: Deep understanding of anesthetic agents, patient monitoring (ECG, blood pressure, SpO2, capnography), and emergency response.
  • Venipuncture & IV Catheterization: High level of proficiency in placing catheters and drawing blood from cephalic, saphenous, and jugular veins.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

An Associate's Degree in Veterinary Technology from a program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Must possess an active credential as a Certified (CVT), Registered (RVT), or Licensed (LVT) Veterinary Technician, or be eligible to take the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE).

Preferred Education:

A Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Veterinary Technology or a closely related field, which can provide a foundation for advanced specialty or leadership roles.
