This individual is the North Star for the entire development team, responsible for establishing, communicating, and defending the core vision of the project. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Establish, articulate, and relentlessly champion the high-level creative vision, core gameplay loop, and emotional tone for the project, ensuring a cohesive experience from concept to post-launch.
  • Serve as the primary creative decision-maker, providing clear direction and resolving creative disagreements across all disciplines to maintain a unified and consistent product.
  • Direct and mentor multidisciplinary teams—including design, art, audio, narrative, and engineering—to ensure all creative output is of high quality and perfectly aligns with the established vision.
  • Collaborate intimately with the Production team to define the project's scope, identify and mitigate creative risks, and ensure the vision is achievable within the allocated budget and schedule.
  • Author and maintain core vision-setting documentation, such as the Game Design Document (GDD) and other creative pillars, to serve as a reference point for the entire development team.
  • Lead the creation of playable prototypes and vertical slices to prove out core mechanics, validate the player experience, and secure buy-in from internal leadership and external partners.
  • Conduct regular, in-depth reviews of game builds, art assets, narrative scripts, and audio-visual elements, providing specific, constructive, and actionable feedback to uphold quality.
  • Act as the lead creative spokesperson for the game, passionately and clearly presenting the vision, progress, and design rationale to executive management, publishers, and marketing teams.
  • Define and direct the game's narrative structure, character arcs, and world-building, ensuring a story that is deeply integrated with gameplay and resonates emotionally with players.
  • Oversee the design of all major game systems, including combat, progression, economy, and social features, to ensure they are balanced, engaging, and supportive of the core experience.
  • Foster a dynamic, collaborative, and psychologically safe studio culture that encourages creative risk-taking, open communication, and a shared passion for the project.
  • Analyze player feedback, user research data, and market analytics to make informed, data-driven adjustments to the game design, enhancing player satisfaction and engagement.
  • Direct external creative partners, including voice actors during recording sessions, composers for the musical score, and sound design teams, to ensure all auditory elements align with the game’s atmosphere.
  • Lead and facilitate creative brainstorming sessions, design workshops, and sprint reviews to generate innovative ideas and solve complex design and production challenges.
  • Work closely with the Marketing and Communications teams to guide the creation of trailers, gameplay demos, key art, and other public-facing materials to ensure they authentically represent the game.
  • Take ultimate ownership of the final quality and critical/commercial reception of the game, making the difficult but necessary calls to ship a polished, successful, and acclaimed product.
  • Translate high-level business goals and franchise strategies into actionable, game-specific creative direction and design philosophies that serve both the player and the business.
  • Ensure the game's core architecture and design philosophies account for potential post-launch content, live-service updates, or future sequels, ensuring long-term viability.
  • Actively mentor senior and lead-level creatives, helping them develop their leadership skills and fostering the next generation of creative talent within the studio.
  • Maintain a deep and current understanding of the gaming market, competitor titles, and emerging technologies to identify opportunities for innovation and maintain a competitive edge.

Secondary Functions

  • Collaborate with the PR and Community teams to craft talking points and participate in media interviews, live streams, and public events.
  • Contribute to studio-level strategic planning, including future project greenlighting and technology roadmap discussions.
  • Assist the recruitment team in interviewing and attracting top-tier creative talent to the studio.
  • Provide high-level creative guidance and feedback on other projects within the studio portfolio as a trusted member of the creative council.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or, more commonly, equivalent extensive professional experience demonstrating mastery of the craft.

Preferred Education:

  • A Master’s degree in a related field such as Interactive Entertainment, Fine Arts, or Film can be beneficial but is not required.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

Experience managing large, multi-disciplinary teams through the entire development lifecycle, from concept to launch and live support, is essential.
