Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conceptualize, document, and build compelling game levels from initial paper designs and 2D maps to 3D grey-box blockouts and final, shippable-quality states.
  • Take complete ownership of entire levels or significant world sections, ensuring their successful implementation and quality from concept to final game release.
  • Design and meticulously craft level layouts that feature strong composition, clear player navigation, and engaging moment-to-moment gameplay flow.
  • Script complex gameplay events, cinematic sequences, combat encounters, and dynamic environmental interactions using visual scripting tools like Unreal Blueprints or similar in-house systems.
  • Collaborate intimately with artists to transform blockout levels into visually stunning and thematically coherent game worlds, ensuring art supports gameplay.
  • Work directly with narrative and quest designers to integrate story objectives and environmental storytelling seamlessly into the level's structure and pacing.
  • Place and tune AI encounters, designing combat spaces that support the game's mechanics and provide a balanced and exciting challenge curve.
  • Prototype and iterate on level designs rapidly, utilizing player feedback and analytics data to identify friction points and enhance the overall player experience.
  • Implement and balance puzzles, traversal challenges, and exploration-based objectives that reward player curiosity and mastery.
  • Define and meticulously place gameplay objects, including cover points, interactive props, resources, and collectibles, to guide and enrich the player's journey.
  • Ensure all levels and gameplay spaces adhere to strict performance budgets, including memory, framerate, and draw call limits, by optimizing geometry and object placement.
  • Act as the primary advocate for the player, constantly evaluating design choices from the player's perspective to ensure clarity, fairness, and maximum fun.
  • Create and maintain detailed design documentation, flowcharts, and presentations to clearly communicate the vision and mechanics of a level to the wider team.
  • Conduct and participate in frequent playtesting sessions, providing constructive, detailed feedback on all areas of the game, not just level design.
  • Troubleshoot and debug gameplay issues within your levels, resolving problems related to scripting, collision, AI behavior, and player flow.
  • Balance the difficulty, pacing, and emotional arc of a level to create a rollercoaster of tension, excitement, exploration, and resolution.
  • Collaborate with engineers and technical designers to develop and refine the level design pipeline, tools, and best practices.
  • Set up and fine-tune gameplay volumes such as trigger zones, audio environments, lighting scenarios, and post-processing effects to enhance mood and player feedback.
