Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate multi-camera production switchers (e.g., Ross Carbonite, Blackmagic ATEM, Grass Valley) to execute seamless live-to-tape or live-to-stream productions.
  • Set up, configure, frame, and operate a variety of professional video cameras, including studio configurations, ENG/EFP setups, and robotic PTZ systems.
  • Perform live video shading and color correction using camera control units (CCUs) to ensure a consistent, high-quality, and aesthetically pleasing look across all camera sources.
  • Manage and operate instant replay systems (such as EVS or similar platforms) to capture, organize, and play back key moments during live sports or event coverage.
  • Configure, monitor, and troubleshoot live streaming encoders for robust delivery to various content delivery networks (CDNs) and social media platforms like YouTube and Facebook Live.
  • Skillfully operate graphics and character generator (CG) systems (e.g., Ross Xpression, Chyron) to insert lower thirds, full-screen graphics, and other visual overlays as directed.
  • Manage the recording of multiple isolated (ISO) camera feeds and program outputs, ensuring media is correctly labeled, stored, and archived for post-production.
  • Establish, test, and troubleshoot complex video signal flows, including SDI, fiber optic, and IP-based (NDI) routing, to ensure signal integrity from source to destination.
  • Collaborate closely with the Director and Technical Director during productions to flawlessly execute the creative vision, anticipating cues and responding to commands in real-time.
  • Conduct thorough pre-production checks and system verifications on all video equipment to guarantee full operational readiness before a show or event begins.
  • Set up and manage video playback systems, cueing and playing pre-recorded video clips, animations, and other media assets during a live production.

Secondary Functions

  • Support the physical setup, cabling, and teardown of all video production equipment, ensuring a safe and organized work environment.
  • Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and minor repairs on cameras, lenses, tripods, and other associated video hardware to prolong equipment life and reliability.
  • Assist the Video Engineer in diagnosing and resolving more complex technical issues with hardware, software, and signal infrastructure.
  • Manage and maintain an inventory of video assets and media, ensuring proper organization and accessibility for current and future projects.
  • Operate teleprompter systems for on-air talent, controlling the speed and flow of the script to match the presenter's delivery.
  • Interface with the audio department to ensure audio signals are correctly embedded within the video stream and routed appropriately.
  • Configure and manage video conferencing systems (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams) for hybrid events, integrating remote presenters seamlessly into the production.
  • Stay current with emerging video technologies, broadcast standards, and innovative production workflows to contribute to continuous improvement.
  • Provide clear and concise communication with all members of the production crew, including lighting, audio, stage management, and talent.
  • Uphold all standards for video quality control, constantly monitoring for issues such as dropped frames, signal instability, poor focus, or incorrect exposure.
  • Participate in post-event debriefs to provide feedback and identify opportunities for improvement in future productions.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Live Video Switching: Proficiency with production switchers from brands like Ross, Blackmagic Design, Grass Valley, or NewTek.
  • Camera Operation & Shading: Deep experience with professional broadcast cameras (Sony, Panasonic, etc.) and the use of Camera Control Units (CCUs) for color matching.
  • Signal Flow & Routing: Strong understanding of video signal standards (SDI, HDMI), routing systems, and signal conversion.
  • Replay Systems: Hands-on experience with replay and server systems like EVS, DreamCatcher, or similar platforms.
  • Streaming & Encoding: Knowledge of live streaming protocols (RTMP, SRT) and experience with hardware/software encoders (AJA, Teradek, OBS).
  • PTZ Camera Control: Skill in operating robotic cameras using joystick controllers and software for smooth, on-air movements.
  • Graphics Integration: Familiarity with integrating and operating character generators (CG) and graphics playout systems.
  • Technical Troubleshooting: Proven ability to rapidly diagnose and resolve video signal issues in a high-pressure live environment.
  • Video over IP: Working knowledge of IP-based video transport protocols like NDI and ST 2110.
  • Media Management: Competency in managing digital assets, including recording, logging, and archiving footage.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

2-5 years of hands-on experience as a video operator in a professional live event, broadcast, corporate, or house of worship production environment.

  • A portfolio or reel demonstrating technical skills in camera operation, switching, or replay is a strong plus.
